Donovan Lee Damon Best - God has taken our perfect and beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin Donovan Lee Damon Best to be with him in heaven. He was born on December 15, 2003. He passed away on March 17, 2013. In his short time with us here on earth, he was compassionate beyond his years. He had a deep love of animals and family. His beautiful smile and sense of humor would bring joy to everyone he touched. His greatest wish in life was that everyone would be nice to one another. We will miss him dearly. Dorothy was born July 27, 1950, to Charles H. and Faye I. (Proctor) Downing in Sacramento, California. Dorothy traveled around the United States with her family while her Dad was in the United States Air Force.  Finally settling for a while in Washington, Dorothy graduated in 1969 from Clover Park High School in Lakewood, Washington.

Marlys SmithMarlys Marie Gunderson Smith of Centralia passed away peacefully at home on March 5, 2013. She was born in Bismarck, North Dakota on March 29, 1932 to Roy and Evelyn (Gray) Gunderson.

She graduated from Elma High School in 1950 and on September 12 of that same year she enlisted in the service for three years, being discharged on December 20, 1953.

Dale Novotney. After a valiant fight, Dale lost his battle with brain cancer on October 4, 2011. He was born on July 31, 1952 in Tacoma. His life’s work was operating heavy equipment, the bigger the better. He loved it. Fishing and hunting were favorite hobbies. He was preceded in death by his father Stan, and his brother Gary. He is survived by his wife Sandi, mother Lois, and sisters Lori Frank (Steven) and Judy Donoghue (Michael), as well as three nephews, two nieces, and one great-nephew. Ruby MacFarlaneRuby May MacFarlane (December 3, 1933 – September 23, 2011)  passed away after a courageous battle from lung related diseases. She resided in the same home in Lakewood, WA for the past 53 years, where she was surrounded by her loving family upon her passing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy in 1995. She is survived by two brothers, Jay Reeder and Paul Lavell, three children, Vickie (A.J.), Joyce MacFarlane, and Kelvin (Bev), grandchildren Melissa, Amy, Kyle, Jennifer, and Brennan, and great-grandchildren Kaelyn, Jacoby, and Colton. Ruby retired from civil service after 30 years. A special thanks to “Life Care at Home” in Federal Way. Our fondest memory of Mom was when she would call us on our birthdays and sing Happy Birthday. Maxie W. Fields Sr. On July 13, 2009, Maxie W. Fields Sr., 88, peacefully made his final journey to abide forever with his Lord and Savior. Born February 27, 1921 to Tollie Fields and Cynthia Hull in Learned, Mississippi, he was the second of ten children. He was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Melissa A. Dawkins. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joyce M. Fields, his brother Coolidge Fields of Jackson, MS, his children, Phillip L. Fields, Sharon Gilmore (Fields), Maxie W. Fields, Jr., Barbara J. Daniel Vincent McElligott Sr. of Tacoma, passed away July 13, 2009 at age 76. Mr. McElligott served the citizens of the United States for 50 years. He was a 30-year U.S. Army combat veteran, retiring as a CW4 in 1983, followed by a 20-year Civil Service career, also with the Army. Mr. McElligott was preceded in death by his first wife Loretta Jennifer McElligott, and is survived by his wife Sukie, four sons, eleven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He’s also survived by two sisters and three brothers. reed_smooth2Lester “Reed” Richardson passed away on June 23 2009. This kind and gentle man was born in Texas to a military family and was raised and educated in Washington State.  After serving in the Army for two years, including a tour of duty in Viet Nam, Reed joined the Washington State Patrol.  After two years with the State Patrol, Reed returned to college and earned a BA degree in Business Administration from the University of Puget Sound in 1982.  He had a successful career as an accountant, working at several business firms and taught business classes at Pierce College. Reed relocated to Southern California in 1999 continuing his work as an accountant.  He was a member of Saint Michael’s Parish in Poway where he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, sponsored several RCIA candidates and taught one year of High School Religious Education.  He also was a volunteer for the International Relief Team of San Diego that served victims of the Cedar Fires.  Reed’s hobby was wood working and he loved to play golf and watch sports on TV. Devoted husband, son, brother, father, and grandfather, Reed was predeceased by his father L.R.  He is survived by his loving wife Teresa, his mother Emma Frances, daughter Lara Jaeger and her husband Geoff, grandchildren Megan, Jessica, Jake and Lucy, son, Raymond, brother Bob and his wife Rayanne, stepchildren, Daniel, Olivia, and Victoria, step grandsons Jason and Garrett,  his Uncle Buddy, Aunt Betty, Uncle Fred and numerous nieces and nephews. Mass will be celebrated Thursday, July 23rd at 2:00 pm at St. Ann Catholic Church, 7001 Park Ave, Tacoma, reception to follow. Reed is truly loved and will be missed by all.

medlin-glennGlenn “Popeye” Medlin Beloved husband of Marie went to be with the Lord on July 9, 2009, after a sudden illness. He was a quiet and gentle man, loved by all who met him. He served in the army during the Korean War and retired from Weyerhaeuser. Glenn is preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and Clyde, and his stepdaughter Yvette. He is also survived by sons Mark (Dani), Matthew (Bobbi), stepson Scott and large extended family. He will be really missed by all, especially his buddy Quentin. Glenn leaves behind 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. The family would like to thank the cardiac staff at St. Joe’s and University of WA hospitals for their care and compassion during Glenn’s stay. sousie-johnJohn Wallace Sousie 1942 – 2009 John Sousie, a longtime Tacoma resident, passed away July 14, 2009 at the age of 66. The past two years, John fought hard the complications of Lewy Body Dementia. John was born October 23, 1942, in Elma, WA to Doris (Evans) and John B. Sousie. He was raised in Elma, graduating from Elma High School in 1961. John worked at Simpson Timber Co., and attended Grays Harbor College. He then moved to Tacoma to study carpentry at Bates Vocational Technical College, where he became a journeyman carpenter. John served in the Navy from 1965 to 1967. He and Janet (Williams) were married August 27, 1966, and she joined him at Pacific Beach, WA, where John served at the Pacific Beach Naval Facility. Upon discharge from the Navy, John and Janet moved to Tacoma, WA, where they raised their two daughters, Deborah and Christine. John worked 34 years in the construction industry, the last 17 of those with Rushforth Construction before his retirement in 2002. John was a member of the Tacoma Elks and Carpenters Union 470. John was an outdoors person who enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, camping and golfing. Since his retirement, John enjoyed his family and grandchildren and working in his large yard with his faithful dogs at his side. John was preceded in death by his father, John B. Sousie. His mother Doris Sousie resides in Elma. John is also survived by his wife Janet, daughters Debbie (Daren) Rohde of Fircrest and Christine Sousie of Tacoma. The grandchildren who will miss Grandpa are Nick and Kate Rohde, and Marcellus, TJ, and Riley Watkins. John is also survived by sisters Betty (Cliff) Reichel of Olympia and Bonnie (Chuck) Ulmer of Sicklerville, NJ, nephew Shawn Brumley of Dufer, OR, and nieces Susan Ulmer and Jennifer Fuhrmeister, both of New Jersey. Many thanks to the wonderful, kind, tireless individuals who have cared for John the past few months especially the staff of Avamere Highlands. Lloyd D. Thomas Jan. 26, 1919 ~ July 11, 2009 Peacefully passed away Saturday July 11, 2009. Lloyd leaves behind his wife of 63 years Loretta and their three children David, Aleta and James. Lloyd is also survived by five grandchildren Cindy, Christy, James, Mariann, Bill and six great grandchildren. Lloyd lived an active life in the Tacoma area belonging to the CCC’s and served in the Army was wounded and a POW during WWII. He retired from Tacoma City Light after 30+ years. Lloyd was very active in church and community activities and was proud of his position as Chaplin with the local Purple Hearts, VA Chapter. His love and contributions to family, church and community will be missed. Jon Knowles Whiting (Lt. Col. US Army Ret.) Jon K. Whiting, age 75, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on July 13, 2009 after a courageous nine-year battle with cancer. Jon is survived by his wife of 49 years, Hildegard, of Giessen, Germany, his three children and spouses, Leslie (Jerry), Jeanette (Will), Ian (Krista), seven grandchildren, brother Ted, sister Mary, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jon was born on October 20, 1933 in Santa Cruz, California, the third child of Leslie and Marjorie Whiting. After graduating from Santa Cruz High School, he attended and played baseball at the University of San Francisco. Upon graduation in 1955, Jon began his 22-year career as an officer in the United States Army. Lt. Col. Jon K. Whiting served his country proudly overseas in Korea, Germany and Vietnam, as well as numerous bases stateside. Jon retired from the Army in 1978 and settled with his family in Lakewood, Washington, where he began his second career as a realtor/property manager. Jon will be interred with military honors at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a cancer charity. ouimet-helen-tntHelen Doris Sullivan Ouimet was born on January 21, 1922 in Springfield, MA, and joined her deceased husband, Roy William Ouimet, the day before their 63rd wedding anniversary on May 31, 2009, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Daniel Sullivan, two sisters and brother, and her granddaughter Aleda Ouimet. Helen was an Air Force wife and participated in many organizations with Roy over the years, including St. John Bosco Church, Elks Post 174, Veterans of Foreign Wars, AMVETS, A.R.E.W.S., Eagles, and the Knights of Columbus. Helen is survived by son Phillip, daughter Mary Telega (Terrence), son Richard (JoAnn), son Daniel (Diane), son Steven (Debi), grandchildren David, Kathryn, Matthew, Megan, Derek, Kirk, Brad, Valerie, Selena, Joseph and Tyler, great-grandchildren Devin, Collin, Jacob, Lillian, Jeremy, Isabella, Elizabeth, Madelyn, and Kaylie, and special friend Elsie. Robert L. Stein Robert “Buck” Stein was born in Cumberland, Maryland on Jan. 20th, 1922. He was the son of Clarence H. Stein and Agnes Long. Buck graduated from Allegany High School and attended Washington and Lee University. He was a veteran of WWII and served from 1942 – 46. Robert and his wife Connie arrived in Tacoma on Labor Day, 1949. He worked at various jobs until a family friend loaned him the money to purchase his first drive-in, located at 48th and Pacific Avenue. Buck continued to operate the drive-in business for 46 years, and at the height of his operation had 7 Dairy Queens/ Dairy Dell stores. He enjoyed getting up every morning and collecting his boxer dog and visiting each location. Buck was extremely proud of his organization and his excellent personnel who managed and operated the businesses. Buck loved to travel, and, with his wife at his side, journeyed across most of the globe. He never imagined he would have the opportunity to see the actual ruins and visit the sights of the civilizations he read about in his extensive collection of history books. Buck passed from this life on May 31, 2009, peacefully in his sleep, at the Tobey Jones Health Care Center. Robert is survived by his wife Constance Stein, his son Gary and his wife Melody, his daughter Patricia Parsons and her husband Brent Parsons, and their 3 children, Alicia, Matthew and Shelby Parsons. He retired from Puget Sound National Bank after 35 years. He had been a volunteer at Tacoma General Hospital for the past 5 years. He considered this an extremely important part of his life. He is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Norma. He leaves behind 2 daughters Gail Carlton (John) and Laurie Gleason (Mike), 4 grandchildren, Morgan Jackson (Marco), Lindsay Roman (Paul), Jihan Robinson (Nick), Joshua Carlton (Jill), one great granddaughter, Sloane Robinson, his sister Marlys Berg, niece Allison Berg, and nephew Rick Berg (Cheryl). ELIZABETH LANCASTER Age 92, passed away May 24, 2009 at Helen’s place: Tacoma. She was born in Glendive, Mt, Feb. 18, 1917. Liz was a long time resident of Puyallup since 1938. Retired from Citizen’s State Bank. She will be buried along side her husband, Dick, at Mountain View Cemetery. shumate-robertRobert Milton Shumate 6 April 1921 – 28 May 2009 Dad was born in Olympia to Charles and Jessie (Botts) Shumate. He passed away peacefully at the age of 88 in Tacoma. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty, one brother, Bill, five children, Joyce, (Emmett) Kolowinski, Alan (Stella), Roger (Barb), Debbie (Jerry) Triska, Rob (Sharma), 16 grandchildren (one grandson preceded him in death), 12 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in various capacities and touched many lives. He loved playing the harmonica, which brought much joy to others. His interests included gardening, sports, dancing, and any activity which included his family and friends. Funeral services will be held at the LDS Church, 1102 S. Pearl St., Tacoma, Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009 at 10:00 AM, with viewing 9:00 AM. Interment follows at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Tumwater. She lived a full life with many friends, was active in a garden club, many crafts, pinochle and a bowler. She was also known for her wonderful cooking and baking. Survivors include daughter, Charlene Haglund; son Chuck Raymond; granddaughters, Michelle Reilly (Chris), Denise Solomon, Jennifer Tifaga (Ben), great-grandchildren, Ananda, Molly, Sean, Jeremyah, and Imoan. Mark Avery Liening

liening-markBorn 12/16/1954 in Tacoma, WA to Larry and Janice (Doehler) Liening and passed away 5/29/2009 unexpectedly in Federal Way, WA. Mark worked as a financial advisor for AXA Advisors.

Mark is survived by his 2 daughters, Judy and Avery Liening; brother, Doug (Debra) Liening; and numerous extended family and friends.
