Steilacoom district named to AP honor roll

The Steilacoom Historical School District is pleased to announce that the district is being recognized by the College Board as part of the ”2012 Advanced Placement Honor Roll.” Less than 4% of districts in the Nation (539) have been honored with this distinction, and Steilacoom is one of only two districts in Pierce County being recognized.

Through the advanced placement program, students from across the nation participate in college-level coursework in high schools. Students taking advanced placement classes are eligible for college credit if they take and pass the end-of-course Advanced Placement Exam with a score of 3 or higher.

The honor roll is compiled by the College Board to recognize school districts that expand access to Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum and helps maintain or improve the percent of students that earn college credit by scoring 3 or higher.

Since 2010, participation in Advanced Placement exams at Steilacoom High School has increased 123% (more than doubled), and the percentage of students passing (with a score of 3 or above) has increased by 10%.

Courses offered at Steilacoom High include Spanish Language, United States Government and Politics, United States History, European History, Psychology, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, English Literature and Composition, and English Language and Composition. The School District serves students living in Steilacoom, DuPont, and Anderson Island.
