Letter: Why I’m voting ‘Yes’ on DuPont’s Proposition 1

| October 30, 2012

By Jean Wilcox, DuPont

I am not sure who did the math for those that oppose Proposition 1; but they have  miscalculated this equation! There is NO WAY that our taxes will increase by 84%.

Let me use our home as an example for this math project.  Our new assessed value of our home in DuPont is $251,900.00  and we presently pay $2,881.42 each year in taxes.  If we are going to be assessed an additional $.975 per thousand if Proposition 1 passes, then our additional tax will be $245.60 -  multiply our $251,900 by .975 and you get the $245.60!  The total tax next year equals $3,127.02!

If indeed our taxes would increase by 84% like the opposition to Proposition 1 want us to believe – we would be paying an additional $2,420.39 — bringing our total yearly tax to $5,301.81!  How absurd would that be.

Let me explain how to do the percentage math to this equation.  Divide  the additional tax that we will be assessed ($245.60) by our new tax amount ($3,127.02) and you arrive at the answer — 7.85%.

I, for one, think that an additional $245.60 per year in taxes is reasonable to keep DuPont a wonderful place to live, work and play!

  1. Jim Hills says:

Is it possible that your husband is Larry Wilcox who is on the City Council and he voted yes on this “Lease Lease Back” finance deal that got us into this mess in the beginning? If that is true I can see why you would vote yes, supporting you husband would make sense to you. But it really is a bad call to vote yes on this issue. A no vote is the better choice so the council will have to look at other ways to solve this problem.

Thanks. But, I think it was already clear that it’s only the city of Dupont asking for an “absurd” ~80% tax increase. None of the other taxing authorities (e.g. state, county, pierce county library system, etc..) have been so badly managed and irresponsible.
However, if anyone is not clear yet the city wants you to know the following. We are very lucky to live in a city with a local government that is willing to do the “same level of service” while city employees collected an average 25% pay raise between 2007-2012 and work in a new $20 million dollar facility they planned, approved, and built. All they need from citizens of Dupont is a yes vote for an “absurd” 80% increase in the city portion of the property taxes.

Also, agree with Mr Hill’s comment. If you and/or your spouse is a council member or a city employee you should disclose that for transparency. That would help us understand why you might really be voting yes. Also, the same goes for Mr. Hill. I’ve seen Mr. Hill disclose previously that he’s a previous council member. Probably should disclose that every time you make comment.
