Holiday fundraiser benefits Bates students in need
By Chelsea Lindquist, Communications Specialist, Bates Technical College
TACOMA, Wash. – Bates Technical College employees and students will brave cold temperatures during the morning hours of Thursday, Dec. 6 and Friday, Dec. 7 to help raise funds for Bates students in need at the 21st annual Holiday Food and Toy Drive.
The college’s Fire Service program will light up Yakima Avenue from 11th to Earnest S. Brazill streets with ladder and fire trucks and join volunteers to help canvas the area and collect cash donations from 6:30-10 a.m. Throughout the two-day fundraiser, Fire Service students will continue the annual tradition of performing push-ups for donations.
This year, the college has partnered with Fred Meyer to provide one ready-made holiday meal per recipient. Event organizers will also use funds to purchase gift cards at a toy store. Last year, the drive raised more than $10,000, which organizers used to purchase food and gift cards for about 175 students.
