It is the District’s intention to seek the best balance between work experiences, education and preparation, personal qualities, role expectations of the principal, and the ability to respond to the community’s educational needs.

Andrea Lopez Vann was honored during halftime at the annual Steilacoom High School Alumni Basketball game, held Dec. 30 at SHS.

Vann, Class of 1999, was unable to attend the ceremony because of business obligations, but SHEF representatives (Steilacoom Historical Education Foundation) Linda Evanson and Sharon Westman made the presentation.

Orange and red aren't exactly holiday colors—but they are the colors worn during a popular holiday occasion in Steilacoom. The occasion?

The 18th annual Steilacoom High School alumni basketball game. The game was played on Dec. 30 at the school's gym, and halftime entertainment included presentation of the Steilacoom Historical Education Foundation's Alumni Award Presentation. (Read that story elsewhere in this issue).

Shoppers at Saturday’s (Dec. 3)  annual Red Ribbon Bazaar at Steilacoom High School have an opportunity to go home with some one-of-a-kind gifts this year. The bazaar, designed as a fundraiser for the several school programs keeps growing and growing, said coordinator Bettye Craft.

The Red Ribbon Bazaar at Steilacoom High School is just over 2 weeks away but the students are getting ready.  The Key Club members are planning the children’s activity area that will include a Santa for photos and kid friendly crafts.  Choir members from Pioneer Middle School will be performing first thing in the morning, followed by the Steilacoom High School Choir.

There are few events in one’s life more significant than your high school graduation.  The opportunity to celebrate this important accomplishment sometimes is not afforded to every child for a number of reasons, and quite often it is a matter of economics.

To support all kids, The Steilacoom High School Senior Class Arts and Activities Auction will be held on November 19 at 6 p.m. at the Steilacoom Community Center.  This event will raise funds to support the activities of the graduating class.  Through this event,  funds will be made available for kids who cannot afford caps, gowns, graduation announcements, etc.

Steilacoom Historical School District maintenance staff took advantage of the long, dry season this past month to complete roof repairs to the building known as "old Pioneer" school.

Originally built in 1915, the structure, originally called "Steilacoom School," received repairs that are expected to be good for five years, said Bill Fritz, Superintendent of the Steilacoom Historical School District.

On June 23, 2011, at its regularly scheduled meeting, the Steilacoom Historical School District Board of Directors approved Superintendent Bill Fritz's recommendation that Jan McCrimmon be appointed as principal of Steilacoom High School for the 2011-12 school year.

“I am honored that I was asked to come back for an additional year to serve as principal at a top-flight high school that I love. I can think of nothing that I would rather do professionally,” said Ms. McCrimmon.

“Jan McCrimmon has served 26 years in public education, and the last nine as the principal of Steilacoom High School. There is nobody more qualified to lead the school than her,” said Board chairman, Michael Winkler.

McCrimmon indicates that she decided to delay retirement to provide leadership continuity for the school and to continue, “unfinished business,” in service to students and their learning.

“We are so happy Ms. McCrimmon is willing to lead the high school for one more year.  The school is a great place for students, socially and educationally, and we are glad to have leadership that knows how to make that continue,” said Superintendent Bill Fritz.

Steilacoom Historical School District is seeking public input to assist the Superintendent in developing a competency and qualification profile to be used in selecting, developing, and evaluating a new Steilacoom High School and Pioneer Middle School principals.

On March 28, the French III class took Le Grand Concours National—the French National Exam.  Le Grand Concours is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French.  In this competition, French students in grades 1-12, in all 50 states and abroad, take a written test and compete against students with similar educational background for prizes.

Jan McCrimmon at the Friday, March 25 meeting of the Rotary Club of Lakewood with Club President Mick Johnson.

While attending the Friday, March 25 meeting of the Rotary Club of Lakewood in which Alex Robinson was honored as Student of the Month, Steilacoom High School Principal Jan McCrimmon took the opportunity to inform the club that she will be retiring as principal at the conclusion of the school year.

Alex Robinson's dedication to academics, leadership, athletics and the community is phenomenal! For that reason, Alex is the Rotary Club of Lakewood March 2011 Student of the Month from Steilacoom High School. Alex ranks number 12 in his class of 166 students. With little effort Alex earns A's in such classes as calculus, physics, and AP European History. Alex is intellectually curious and impresses his teachers with continually going beyond the normal requirement of the academic classroom. Alex has earned numerous academic and athletic honors. He received the Nisqually All League Football Award, is a four year Nisqually League and or South Puget Sound League Scholar Athlete, and has accumulated four years of varsity letters in band, football, and baseball.

Haley Mullen, a junior from Steilacoom High School, participated in the Senate Page Program during the seventh week of the 2011 legislative session, along with 17 other students. She was sponsored by Sen. Mike Carrell (R-Lakewood).
