Steilacoom Historical School District #1 Superintendent Bill Fritz will host his third community conversation on Wednesday, December 7, 2011.  This informal discussion session, covering a wide range of participant-generated topics, will take place in the Saltar’s Point Elementary Library starting at 6:30 p.m. and ending at 7:30 p.m.  Any student, parent, or citizen who wants to discuss district issues or learn more about our schools is invited to attend.

Mario Reaves named Teacher of the Year

Mario ReavesMario Reaves, Counselor at Saltar’s Point Elementary in the Steilacoom Historical School District, will be recognized at Natural High’s 11th Annual Sunset Splash Gala on October 28, 2011 in La Jolla, CA. Natural High by the Sundt Memorial Foundation is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit, drug abuse prevention organization dedicated to helping people find their natural high and reject drugs. A natural high is any sport, activity or art from that you love to do and makes you feel good inside. Mario implemented the Natural High program school-wide and has also developed his own Natural High lesson, “Prom Promise” that involves Saltar’s Point 5th graders writing letters to Steilacoom High School seniors about their natural high and asking them to refrain from using drugs or alcohol on prom night. Mario, who can be found teaching in classrooms as well as working with small groups at lunch sessions, feels it is important to teach a proactive curriculum. “This specific curriculum does a fantastic job as an antidrug program”, Mario said. His natural high? Fishing and singing.

Kiwanians help 19 kids get a good start back to school

A school supply drive initiated by Kiwanis Student Support Committee Chair (and Saltar’s Point Liaison), Jeni Martinez, resulted in a donation of backpacks and supplies for 19 students at Saltar’s Point elementary.

"Former Steilacoom High School Key Club member, Barbara Martinez, was a great support doing the shopping and getting the best bang for our Kiwanian dollar", Jeni Martinez proudly stated. After taking the first box of supplies home, Barbara assessed what we had and made a list of what was still needed.

Anxiously fidgeting in their chef coats and hats, ten eager 4th and 5th grade students from Saltar’s Point Elementary waited as their friends, family and district members sampled their healthy after school snack in the second Annual Future Chef cooking competition in Steilacoom Historical School District.

Rube Goldberg comes to Saltar's Point Elementary

A science unit caused things to hop and pop in the Saltar’s Point classrooms of Mrs. Barton and Mrs. Merritt.

After completing study of the Foss "Models and Designs" science kit, the two 5th grade classes participated jointly in a culminating project. Students were challenged to design and build a Rube Goldberg-type 'machine' to pop a balloon with a pin using household items each group provided. Some examples of items used in the Goldberg machine included wind-up toys, dominos, paper towel tubing and even an old shoe!

Steilacoom Historical School District #1 announces the selection of Joel Lang as the new principal of Saltar’s Point Elementary School located in Steilacoom.

"I view Saltar's Point Elementary as a place of hope and learning for everyone - students, staff and families. My commitment is to help the Saltar's Point community make a great school even better," said Lang.
