The Fuchs Foundation is a prominent supporter of scholarships at Pierce College, having given $730,000 over the past 17 years. The generous support from the Fuchs Foundation has helped hundreds of students, and now the need is even greater, said Suzy Ames, executive director of the Pierce College Foundation.

Where is Almost, Maine? You might find this charming little bit of Down East somewhere close to where you’d look for Brigadoon or even Utopia – that is somewhere in the agile mind of the playwright.

John Cariani, who wrote this slice private time in the lives of just short of 10 couples who discover love in the most unusual places, was raised in Maine but didn’t put the exact location of Almost in his play because Almost is really found just around the corner from Everywhere, and, as everyone knows, Everywhere is anywhere you want it to be.

Pierce College has 13 international students on campus this fall who are sponsored by the US Department of Education. The program includes academic training, and introduction to American culture, and the opportunity to share their cultures with us.

LAKEWOOD — Acclaimed local artist and Pierce College art professor Danella Sydow is the featured artist at the Pierce College Fort Steilacoom Fine Arts Gallery through Oct. 28. A total of 11 pieces are on display, including graphite on paper and reliefs.

Sydow is the recipient of the Mayor’s Award from the Olympia Arts Commission. Her work is featured in regional and national publications, held in numerous public and private collections, and has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and Europe, including the St. James Centre in England.

ORTING — A packed field of 129 golfers converged on High Cedars Golf Club on July 28 for the 18th Annual Pierce College Scholarship Scramble. This year’s event raised more than $50,000 ($7,000 more than the previous year) for student scholarships. A record $9,500 was raised through direct donations alone. The total amount raised at this year’s scramble is enough to pay for 50 quarters of education for deserving students at Pierce College.

Pierce College Fort Steilacoom’s cooperative preschool is now enrolling children ages 18 to 36 months for its fall Parent and Child class.

In this unique program, parents attend class with their children, exploring a wide range of topics, including nutrition, guidance, and child development. This approach allows parents to learn firsthand how best to teach and care for their child, build relationships with other parents, and earn two college credits.

Six students in Pierce College’s Business Management program were recently chosen for the Leadership Excellence Institute Award, an honor recognizing the program’s best students, as chosen by professors Dr. Paul Gerhardt and Doug Edison.

The awards were based on academic achievement (a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher), student involvement in the program, and contributions to the community outside the classroom.

LAKEWOOD — Pierce College Fort Steilacoom will kick off summer in the Fine Arts Gallery with an exhibit of paintings by acclaimed Seattle artist Marsha Glazière.

A reception for Glazière will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome to attend. The exhibit opens Thursday and runs through Aug. 11.

Gaining exposure to a new culture is easy, affordable, and exciting when families host international students in their homes. Pierce College is now seeking host families for several international students this academic year.

An informational meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, in the Lakewood Library Meeting Room, 6300 Wildaire Road SW. Pierce College’s international team will be available to explain the host family process and qualifications, answer questions, and share experiences and information. All are welcome to attend.

Pierce College Fort Steilacoom’s music program will welcome 250 singers for a choral celebration of traditional church hymns June 5. The collaboration will feature the Pierce College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, Tacoma Symphony Chorus, Lakes High School Concert Choir, McChord Field Chancel Choir, and Little Church on the Prairie Chancel Choir. In addition, guest singers will be included from Mount Cross Lutheran, Central Lutheran, First Lutheran, and other churches.
