ORTING — A perfect day of light breezes and warm sunshine welcomed a packed field of 129 golfers at High Cedars Golf Club on Aug. 12 for the 17th Annual Pierce College Scholarship Scramble. This year’s event raised nearly $43,000 for student scholarships, enough to pay for 56 quarters of education for deserving students at Pierce College in 2010-11.
Pierce College receives $1.2 million grant
Posted by | CommentsPierce College was recently awarded a five-year, $1.2 million grant from the Department of Education to continue the TRIO Student Support Services program (253-912-3644) at the Fort Steilacoom campus. This grant was especially competitive as the Department of Education reduced the total number of projects by 40 for this award cycle.

Jobs.
A Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success
Posted by | CommentsIn keeping its commitment to provide quality education and support services to its growing veteran student population, Pierce College is seeking the help of a federal grant to raise the level of services even higher.
Pierce College applied to the federal Department of Education for a three-year, $364,000 grant for the development of a Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom. This center would provide veteran students a designated space to gather and learn, a person to help with one-on-one attention, and services to help them be successful in higher education and transition into civilian life.

PR: Pierce College seeks golfers for annual scramble Aug. 12
Posted by | CommentsA fun day on the links Aug. 12 will help students achieve their dreams of a college education and job training. The Pierce College Scholarship Scramble is now recruiting golfers for its annual tournament at High Cedars Golf Club in Orting. The four-person scramble begins with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. The tournament is fast-paced and there are prizes and games, including wine tasting from Basel Cellars, a putting contest, and a Hole in One competition, scattered throughout the course. Single players are invited and will be paired up at the course.

These 11 students from Turkey, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Panama, Costa Rica, Brazil, and South America are attending summer classes at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of State. Six additional students will be arriving this fall.
Pierce College has received two grants from the U.S. Department of State to provide academic and professional training for students from around the world in the 2010-11 academic year. There are currently 11 students taking summer quarter classes at the Fort Steilacoom campus. Six more students will arrive next month for fall quarter.
Pierce College military program ranks high
Posted by | CommentsPierce College has been recognized by Military Times Edge magazine as one of the 50 Most Popular Colleges in its June/July issue. Pierce is ranked 14th out of the top 50, which is based on where active-duty military use their tuition assistance benefits. The data used in the ranking was provided by the Air Force, Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.
Pierce business students honored
Posted by | CommentsTwelve students in Pierce College’s Business Management program were recently chosen for the Leadership Excellence Institute Award, an honor recognizing the program’s best students, as chosen by professors Dr. Paul Gerhardt and Doug Edison.
The awards were based on academic achievement (a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher), student involvement in the program, and contributions to the community outside the classroom.

The library will name the new teen space for Tacoma Narrows Rotary in honor of the Rotary’s strong support of the library and youth in University Place.
Pierce College cyclists help feed the hungry

PR: Continuing Education and Shakespeare Festival
Posted by | Comments“Methinks this summer doth stink too much” need not be your mantra for yet another boring summer. Pierce College is offering fun and excitement with a Shakespearean flair in July.
Earn 10 English or drama credits and see six plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Ore., with the Pierce College Continuing Education program this summer. (Note: K-12 teachers can choose to earn clock hours through the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction instead of college credits for completing this course.)
The Oregon Shakespeare Festival series at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom includes four evening classes before the festival (July 12-15) to help you understand the language and culture and five classes after the play series (July 26-Aug. 2). You’ll put those new skills to work with a trip to Ashland, Ore., July 21-23, for the festival. You’ll see six plays, including “Hamlet,” “Twelfth Night,” “Henry IV,” “American Night,” “Throne of Blood,” and “Pride and Prejudice.”
Cost is $999 and includes Pierce College tuition, tickets to all six plays, a backstage tour and discussion with an actor or director, and four nights in a hotel (double occupancy). Students must provide only their own meals and transportation to and from the festival.

Pierce class geared toward youth sports coaches
Posted by | CommentsWhile youth athletes spend their summer honing their skills, their coaches now have the chance to hone theirs. Pierce College’s Continuing Education program is for the first time offering a class specifically for youth sports coaches. Introduction to Principles of Coaching is a 20-hour course that provides a comprehensive overview of the latest theories and techniques of sports psychology, team and risk management, training and injury prevention, coaching philosophy, and skills training.
