Mann Middle School is hosting its ninth annual Renaissance Fair on Friday, April 30 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the school's gymnasium. Seventh-grade students will re-create a renaissance "town" with their own perception of how people acted and made their wares during this period in world history. The event will also be used as a fundraiser for the seventh grade field trip. The fair is coordinated by students. A team developed a timeline to determine what needed to be accomplished so the fair could be a success. Seventh graders have studied the Renaissance Era in their world history curriculum. Conducting the Renaissance Fair reinforces what the students have learned. For more information about Mann Middle School's Renaissance Fair, contact David Molten at 253-583-5440, ext. 4110.

Forty-three members and guests of the Steilacoom Chamber of Commerce enjoyed a "Spring Evening at The Bair" on Thursday, April 22. Representing the Port of Tacoma, Connie Bacon was the featured guest speaker during the dinner. She stated that the Port is currently conducting a "nationwide search for a new CEO who is trustworthy, who will tell us the right story in business for the Port of Tacoma, who understands strategic thinking, and is a go-getter." According to Bacon, the Port of Tacoma is "beginning to see a tiny rise in activity, but anticipates steady growth over the next five years." She added that the Port has spent $170M to clean-up Puget Sound and Commencement Bay. There are ongoing negotiations with the Puyallup Tribe about possibly operating a terminal, as well. Bus tours of the Port of Tacoma are available to the public and scheduled every couple of months.

Mann Middle School hosted an anniversary tea party Oct. 16 in celebration of the school's 50th anniversary. The event allowed former staff members and students to reconnect with current staff and students to share memories and stories.

Principal Ron Banner started the event with a photo slideshow and introduced special guests, including Roy McLeod, 83, the first assistant principal of Mann who worked under Principal Harry Lang. Then, Lazette Meyers, granddaughter of Iva Alice Mann, gave a welcome introduction recapping some of her favorite memories of her grandmother. Guests were treated to tea, finger sandwiches, cookies and cake—all thanks to supportive Mann volunteers.
