Lakes to host family forum focused on high expectations
Posted by | CommentsLakes High School is hosting a family forum focusing on high expectations and living the “Lakes Way.” The forum will be held Sunday, Feb. 21 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at the high school, 10320 Farwest Drive SW in Lakewood. The event is open to students, parents and community members.
Participants will discuss what it means to set and live up to high expectations. Students and staff will lead sessions around topics including, college readiness; respect; how to support students in being their best; and how to resolve conflicts in a positive manner.

Lakes DECA students qualify for state competition

Sixty-three Lakes High School Distributive Education Club of America (DECA) students attended the Washington DECA Area 7 Leadership Development Competition in Tacoma Jan. 14. Thirty-two students received awards and 23 qualified for the state DECA competition in Bellevue this March. Read More→

He is also a member of the Lakes High School Swim Team. He has a storm chasing team called Mesochase which chases here in the Northwest as well as the Plains of northern Texas, through Oklahoma into Kansas.

Lakewood Rotary teachers and student of the month
Posted by | CommentsTwo educators and a student were recognized for their achievements during a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Lakewood.
Jean Vanderscheer, a 12-year-employee of the Steilacoom Historical School District, and Rachel Hyde, a Mann Middle School Counselor for the Clover Park School District, were named Educator of the Month for their respective school districts. Jung Bae was recognized as the outstanding student of the month from the Clover Park District.
Vandersheer (left) is an elementary school para-educator. One of her assignments is to direct Team Chloe which provides opportunities for all students to teach them responsibility and initiative. She also work’s on the school’s master schedule and is a great reading instructor, according to her nomination from Principal Gary Yoho.
Hyde (right) has been at her school for the last nine years and is the school’s sole counselor. According to the nomination letter she is a “constant professional in every aspect of her job and her commitment to helping students attain their academic goal is second to none.”
Bae (left) is a Lakes High School senior who achieved a perfect score on his SAT tests and has a 4.0 GPA at school. He is also extremely active in several student programs in his school, including tutoring fellow students in calculus and other AP courses.
The 120-member Rotary Club of Lakewood regularly recognizes teachers from the Clover Park and Steilacoom Historical School Districts as well as an outstanding student from each of the district.
The club meets each Friday noon at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club. Greg Horn is currently serving as president.
Clover Park and Lakes High Schools select Daffodil Princesses
Posted by | CommentsClover Park and Lakes High Schools selected their 2009-10 Daffodil Princesses during two separate ceremonies. Clover Park’s Felicia Brown and Lakes’ Kelly Hewitt were crowned princesses after answering an impromptu question and presenting a speech on this year’s theme “Carousel of Spring.” The princesses are both high school seniors and are very involved in their schools and communities.

Lakes student receives perfect SAT score

Lakes High School senior Jung Bae, 17, received a perfect 2,400 on the SAT. Bae prepared for the exam on his own using a study guide. He credits his score on long-term preparation and planning.
“Studying for the exam isn’t something you can cram into a few weeks, it’s a process” said Bae. “My friends have been asking me for exam advice and I’m helping them study and prepare.”
Lakes and CP set to select Daffodil Princesses
Posted by | CommentsLakes and Clover Park High Schools will select their 2009 Daffodil Princesses in two separate ceremonies. Lakes’ ceremony is Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the school’s new Performing Arts Center (PAC). Clover Park’s ceremony is Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in the school’s PAC.
Princess candidates must be seniors with a 3.2 grade point average or better. Daffodil Princesses represent their high school throughout the Daffodil Festival and compete for the title of “queen” in March 2010. This year’s Festival theme is “Carousel of Spring.” Be sure to save the date for the Grand Floral Parade, Saturday, April 10, 2010. Read More→
