Clover Park School District's Beachwood Elementary School and Hudtloff Middle School are 2011 School of Distinction Award winners. The annual award recognizes schools that have made large improvements in student achievement.

Clover Park School District is seeking bids for general contractors for construction of a new Hudtloff Middle School and associated fields, tennis courts and demolition of the existing facility. The project has multiple phases and work will be done while the current school remains occupied. The project is a state funded project through the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Students are scheduled to occupy the new school in Spring 2013; site and field work will be completed in December 2013.

Clover Park School District (CPSD) partnered with the Oakbrook Swim and Tennis Club (OSTC) to allow Hudtloff Middle School tennis players use of the courts while the school is under construction. In turn, district personnel are cleaning and maintaining the courts.

Hudtloff Middle School will hold their 13th annual Memorial Day celebration Thursday, May 26 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Hudtloff gymnasium, 8102 Phillips Rd SW in Lakewood. Students and staff have been planning the event since early March and welcome community participation as they pay tribute to the country’s slain servicemen and women. As a special part of the event, students will honor their own family members and loved ones who died in service or are missing in action. Students will decorate a flag with the family member's name and place it on the school’s front lawn.

The ground was officially broken for the new Hudtloff Middle School in front of a large crowd of community members, staff and students on March 24. Attendees braved the rain to hear the history of the construction project, thanking of voters for their support and other remarks from Principal Moureen David, Board President Walt Kellcy, Jr., Superintendent Debbie LeBeau, and Mayor Doug Richardson, who also chaired the Citizens Committee for Schools. LAKEWOOD—Clover Park School District is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Hudtloff Middle School, Thursday, March 24. Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. behind the school, near the athletic fields (8102 Phillips Road SW in Lakewood.) All community members are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served in the library immediately following the groundbreaking.

Members of the Hudtloff Middle School Hudbots and the Woodbrook Middle School Wildcats Robotics Club participated in the First Lego League Robotics Competition at Lincoln High School where they put their knowledge to the test around a biomedical engineering theme.

Students from the teams built and programmed small robots to accomplish challenges, investigated a research topic and prepared a presentation. The two Hudbots teams researched the impact of biomedical engineering on teenager’s lives, while the Wildcats came up with the idea of placing a computer chip in football helmets to help diagnose brain injuries.

Thank You. Last February, Clover Park School District voters supported a crucial school construction bond to rebuild several outdated, aging schools. Voters responded with overwhelming support. First of all, thank you for your commitment to education and safe, quality facilities for the children in our community.

In this time of economical difficulty and increased demand for accountability, it is our commitment to our community that district staff will create buildings that inspire students and embody our educational priorities while managing taxpayer funds prudently. Therefore, we wanted to provide a progress report on our implementation efforts for the 2010 school construction bond to date.

LAKEWOOD- Lakes High School's Speech and Debate Team hosted a speech competition for Hudtloff Middle School students on June 17. The Lakes students were working with middle schoolers in Mary Carlisle's Advanced Studies Program on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout June to tell them about various speech events and prepare them for the competition.

Forty-three members and guests of the Steilacoom Chamber of Commerce enjoyed a "Spring Evening at The Bair" on Thursday, April 22.  Representing the Port of Tacoma, Connie Bacon was the featured guest speaker during the dinner.  She stated that the Port is currently conducting a "nationwide search for a new CEO who is trustworthy, who will tell us the right story in business for the Port of Tacoma, who understands strategic thinking, and is a go-getter." According to Bacon, the Port of Tacoma is "beginning to see a tiny rise in activity, but anticipates steady growth over the next five years."  She added that the Port has spent $170M to clean-up Puget Sound and Commencement Bay.  There are ongoing negotiations with the Puyallup Tribe about possibly operating a terminal, as well.  Bus tours of the Port of Tacoma are available to the public and scheduled every couple of months.

Hollieann White, a mentor through Communities in Schools of Lakewood, was recently recognized as one of Pierce County's best mentors. Hollieann is in her 2nd year of mentoring a student at Hudtloff Middle School. Not only has she been consistent, she has been able to get involved in her mentee’s education. Holliann has participated in family meetings and works hard to encourage her mentee to do her best.

As an employee of Harborstone Credit Union, Hollieann has been helped spread the word about the need for additional mentors there and at McChord Air Force Base. Not only is she a great mentor herself, she has single-handedly helped provide mentors to many other Lakewood youth.
