Public schools are one of the pillars upon which a community is built. While the Clover Park School District has seen improvement in many areas over the last few years, much remains to be done. Of the many ways a community can help a school district, ensuring high achieving students have access to high level coursework and motivated teachers (thus remaining in the district), ranks high. That is why the Rotary Club of Lakewood partnered with the Clover Park School District nearly five years ago with the goal of bringing the International Baccalaureate (IB) program to the district. IB is an international, standards-based, education curriculum with exceedingly high standards. Click here for more information.

Debbie LeBeau, Clover Park School District Superintendent

Thank You. Last February, Clover Park School District voters supported a crucial school construction bond to rebuild several outdated, aging schools. Voters responded with overwhelming support. First of all, thank you for your commitment to education and safe, quality facilities for the children in our community.

In this time of economical difficulty and increased demand for accountability, it is our commitment to our community that district staff will create buildings that inspire students and embody our educational priorities while managing taxpayer funds prudently. Therefore, we wanted to provide a progress report on our implementation efforts for the 2010 school construction bond to date.

LAKEWOOD- Students from Harrison Preparatory School visited the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at Camp Murray as part of their fourth annual Week Without Walls service learning project on June 2. The focus of the project was emergency preparedness and disaster management and the students learned what the role of EOC staff is during emergencies. The students have been learning about the different kinds of natural disasters they could encounter in the Northwest and how to prepare for them.

I have appreciated seeing news articles featuring the United Way Varsity Letter in Community Service Program (here and here). Two of my sons earned this distinction this year. Micah (Junior) got his second letter via Steilacoom High School, and Noah (Freshman) got his first. Noah is also the very first varsity letter winner of any type for Harrison Prep. Noah volunteered over 250 hours to earn the Varsity Letter - mostly working with younger children at the YMCA and his church. His 250 hours also brought a Gold level Presidential Service Award from President Obama.

Your two artcles have included photos of the Steilacoom and Clover Park School District letter winners - minus a photo of Noah (left). Thanks for highlighting these great young people, who have grasped early in life the tremendous value of giving time and talents to benefit others.

LAKEWOOD- Nineteen Clover Park High School (CPSD) high schoolers earned a varsity letter in community service this year. The students received their letter on May 25 at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall. Each year since 2002, United Way of Pierce County partners with Pierce County schools to recognize and reward students for their volunteer efforts in the community. Students who volunteer 145 hours or more of service in a year can earn their varsity letter, the same as those earned by athletes and musicians. Applicants must meet the following basic qualifications: be a student in grades 9-12 in Pierce County; complete at least 145 hours of community service from April 1 to March 31; at least 50 of the total hours must be in non-school related activities; and have at least one school related volunteer activity. The CPSD students who are varsity letter in community service recipients are:

The school finished a feasibility study -- the first of three steps to become an IB World School -- in June, after they identified school resources and analyzed the IB philosophy and curriculum.

"We are very excited to offer the Middle Years Program curriculum and practices at Harrison Prep," said Lisa Boyd, principal. "This program introduces our students to rigorous international standards and allows our staff to have access to an international community of teachers and resources. We are very excited."
