Carole Jacobs, judge and board member, and Lynn Wilson, judge and administrator for business services and capital projects, sample tasty delights at the Kids Can Cook event.
Eighteen fourth-graders took over the district kitchen Jan. 25 for the fifth annual Kids Can Cook Competition, sponsored by Sodexo.
Students from Beachwood, Clarkmoor, Dower, Evergreen, Greenwood, Hillside, Idlewild, Lake Louise, Park Lodge and Tillicum Elementary Schools prepared unique recipes with the guidance of a student nutrition employee. The student chefs were responsible for their finished food products, including plate and table presentation.
A panel of judges tasted each recipe and had the difficult task of selecting just five winners in the following categories:
- Health-Conscious Foods: Kylee Kennedy, Greenwood, Banana Oatmeal Smoothie
- Kid-Friendly Preparation: Hope Heugel, Hillside, No-Bake Trail Mix Cookies
- Fun Foods: Kamyla McCormick, Evergreen, Fruity Croissant
- Best Table Presentation: Ryan Wynder, Evergreen, Ryan's Mystery
- Judge's Choice: Elijah Barragan, Evergreen, Pizza (Meat or Veggie)

PR: Dower principal inspiration behind upcoming blood drive
Posted by | CommentsKevin Brooks, long-time principal of Clover Park School District's Dower Elementary School, is recovering from the removal of a brain tumor. In support of her continuing health, Dower staff members organized a community blood drive Tuesday, Aug. 31 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Clover Park School District’s Student Services Center, 10903 Gravelly Lake Drive SW.
"Kevin is a phenomenal person and we wanted to do something to honor her,” said Kathleen Schwartze, a Dower kindergarten teacher. "She doesn’t need food or flowers or donations, so we wanted to do something to show her our support while also helping the community.” To sign up to participate in the blood drive, call Schwartze at 583-5240 or call Cascade Regional Blood Services at 1-877-24-BLOOD (25663).
American Legion retires flag at Dower
Posted by | CommentsMembers of American Legion Post #187 in Lakewood retired the American flag at Dower Elementary on June 22. The school received a new flag in November, 2009 and wanted to retire the old one due to its weathered condition. The proper way to dispose of an American flag is to burn it. The veterans placed the flag into a fire with the student body observing the burning. It was explained when the flag burning has been completed, its ashes will be gathered and buried. This was an educational program for both students and adults. Lakewood Fire Department firefighters were also present to show support for the process.
Teaching, learning grants for CPSD teachers
Posted by | CommentsThree Clover Park School District teachers have been awarded two-year Teaching and Learning 21st Century (TL21) grants, which will provide training in classroom technology integration and equipment for their classrooms. Clover Park High School's Mary Sharp and Dower Elementary School's Linda Muir and Alison Uuereb each received $7,600 grants for the 2010/11 school year. The teachers will use the grant money for equipment and training to monitor student progress and deliver classroom instruction in a more motivational and varied way. A total of 100 grants were awarded to teachers in Washington state this year. The TL21 grant program is funded federally through the Enhancing Education Through Technology program, a component of Title II, Part D of the No Child Left Behind Act. Money for the grants will come from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Dr. Adam Poyfair - Making a Difference
Posted by | CommentsDr. Adam Poyfair, a new dentist in our community, has volunteered for the Medical Teams International Dental Van. This beautiful new van is a mobile dental unit that goes directly to the schools and other sites to meet the needs of many of our students with moderate to severe dental needs. This effort is in partnership with Caring for Kids. The van services the kids at Tyee Park, Southgate and Dower, and will do a special day at Clover Park High School. The biggest problem we face is a volunteer dentist for the one day commitments. So we want to thank Dr. Adam Poyfair for making a difference in our community! Call and thank Dr. Poyfair, Light Dental Studio, 471-2222. If you are a dentist or you know a dentist who would volunteer for a day please call Diane Formoso at 253-279-9777.
