Celebrating Champions in Lakewood

Seats are filling up fast for the annual Champions for Youth Breakfast on Thursday, March 29 at the Old Country Buffet in Lakewood Towne Center. The event runs from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.  Communities in Schools of Lakewood (CISL), host of the benefit, impacts more than 1,500 students each year through its After-school, Mentor and Readiness to Learn programs.

Daniel Cardinali, the president of Communities in Schools, from Washington D.C. will serve as the keynote speaker. Clover Park student, Kayli and her mentor, Kathie Theoe, will also share their story about the power of mentoring. You may reserve a seat for yourself or a group by contacting CISL at 589-7489.  A donation of $50 is requested at the time of registration.

CPSD kindergarten registration May 14-18

Clover Park School District elementary schools will register new kindergartners for the 2012-13 school year Monday, May 14 through Friday, May 18, 2012. During this time, each elementary school will hold a kindergarten orientation for students and their families. Orientation dates and times will be listed on the events calendar on the district website.

To enroll for kindergarten for the 2012-13 school year, children must be five-years- old on or before Aug. 31. The child’s birth certificate and immunization records are required at the time of registration. For more information on kindergarten registration, please visit the Kindergarten page of the district website.

CPSD to hold community budget forum on March 28

Clover Park High School’s African American Club is hosting a Black History Celebration on Tuesday, March 20 at 6 p.m. in the school’s Performing Arts Center, 10903 Gravelly Lake Drive SW. The event, titled “Learn from Yesterday, Live for Today, Hope for Tomorrow,” will feature special guest speakers and a Speed Mentoring event, where students will have the opportunity to meet area African American leaders to ask questions, network and get motivated for life after high school. For more information, contact Roslyn Smith at 583-5522 or Yolanda Haskins at 583-5521.

LAKEWOOD -- After a three-year effort, Harrison Preparatory School in the Clover Park School District achieved certification as an International Baccalaureate World School. Known for rigorous academics and a global focus, the school previously earned a 2011 Washington Achievement Award from state education officials. (Read News Tribune cover story here).

The International Baccalaureate is a non-profit educational foundation whose programs for students aged 3 to 19 help develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. Sen. Mike Carrell, R-Lakewood, who represents the 28th Legislative District in which Harrison Prep is located, said he couldn’t be more proud of the families and children at Harrison Prep.

Clover Park School District’s Transportation Department once again received an “Excellent” rating by the Washington State Patrol (WSP) during an annual unannounced inspection. On Jan. 24, just two business days after the ice and snow storm that shut down schools, the WSP inspected 25 percent of the district’s fleet that is used to transport students. Read More→

Clover Park School Board adjusts meeting schedule

The Clover Park School District Board of Directors has canceled its meeting on Monday, Feb. 27.

A special joint meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 5 with the Clover Park Technical College (CPTC) Board of Trustees to discuss the transfer and purchase of land for Harrison Preparatory School and the Oakwood/Southgate Elementary School. Architectural renderings of the new schools will be shared with both boards. The meeting begins at 3 p.m. and will be held in the Rotunda, Building 3 on the CPTC campus, 4500 Steilacoom Blvd. SW in Lakewood.

Clover Park School Board Schedules Retreat

The Clover Park School District Board of Directors has scheduled a retreat for Saturday, Feb. 4. The retreat will be held in the board room of the Tacoma Country and Golf Club, 13204 Country Club Drive SW, in Lakewood and begins at 8 a.m. and will conclude at 3:45 p.m.

Topics for the retreat include leadership profiles and board development; standard operating procedures; board travel and attendance at conferences, workshops, etc.; accountability plan outcomes; the board meeting and reports schedule; and discussion of Policy 3110, Age at Entrance.

On Jan 9, 2012, after three years of preparation and planning, Clover Park School District's Harrison Preparatory School received its official authorization as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, offering the Middle Years Program (MYP) to sixth- through 10th-graders (students 11 to 16-years-old).

“I am thrilled we have finally been authorized as an IB World School,” said Lisa Boyd, principal. “The Middle Years Program introduces our middle school students to rigorous international standards and allows our staff to have access to an international community of teachers and resources.”

Special education Resource Fair Jan. 25

Clover Park School District's Special Education Department is hosting its annual Resource Fair Wednesday, Jan. 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Student Services Center, 10903 Gravelly Lake Drive SW. Families of children with special needs are invited to attend this free event and connect to child-serving agencies and organizations. Voters to consider replacement levy Feb. 14

In September, the Clover Park School District Board of Directors approved a resolution for a replacement, four-year educational programs and operations levy.

The Feb. 14, 2012 levy proposal will replace the district’s current educational programs and operations levy, which expires in 2012. It will not be a new tax.

Clover Park Board honored for community partnerships

The Clover Park School District Board of Directors received an Honorable Mention in the Magna Awards 2012 recognition program for its work to increase and support community partnerships. This entry, along with other winners, will be listed in a special supplement to the May 2012 issue of American School Board Journal.

The board of directors encouraged administrative staff to seek methods to maximize and utilize community and district resources by looking at ways to pursue, research, implement and sustain partnerships for the benefit of students. These partnerships have resulted in better communication and coordination between the organizations and the district. Collaborations have also resulted in more resources benefitting students.
