District ‘refunds’ 2006 bonds—saves taxpayers $5 million

As a result of historically low interest rates, careful monitoring of bond market conditions and good financial management, taxpayers in Clover Park School District will pay less for school construction bonds approved in 2006.
In February 2006, voters approved a $65 million school construction bond proposal to build a new Lakeview Hope Academy and Lakes High School. Both school construction projects are finished and students and staff are thriving in their new schools.
Oakwood and Southgate Elementary Schools named state Reward Schools

Clover Park School District’s Oakwood and Southgate Elementary Schools were recently named high-progress “Reward Schools” by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). According to OSPI, Oakwood and Southgate were identified as Reward Schools using three-year averages – 2009-10 through 2011-12 – of reading and math scores from statewide tests. Only 75 schools in the state were identified as Reward Schools.
Sponsor a Lakewood Child for a Trip to the Opera

On March 17, fifty-five 5th graders at Tyee Park Elementary School will be taking a trip to see the opera, La Traviata at the Pantages Theater. A generous patron of the arts will devote 8 days with the students prior to the trip educating them about the opera. He is also making sure each child has appropriate attire for the event. Over 90% of students at Tyee Park qualify for free and reduced lunch and rarely travel outside of Lakewood, so this trip is a unique opportunity to broaden their horizons.
Merritt, Norris-Handy named educators of the month
Linda Merritt from Steilacoom Historical School District and Judy Norris-Handy from Clover Park School District were awarded Educators of the Month by the Rotary Club of Lakewood at their regular meeting on Friday, February 8, at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. CPSD takes advantage of tax exempt bonds and good credit rating

LAKEWOOD, Wash. – A solid credit rating and tax exempt bonds allows Clover Park School District administrators to save local taxpayers more than $19 million.
In February 2010, with a 62.44 percent approval rate, local voters approved a $92 million school construction bond proposal. The bonds are being used to build a new Hudtloff Middle School, Harrison Preparatory School and a new elementary school (a consolidation of Oakwood and Southgate Elementary Schools).

Eight Clover Park School District teachers earn national certification
Eight Clover Park School District teachers recently earned their National Board Certification.
The newly national certified teachers are:
- Kristen Abbott (Clover Park High School) – Mathematics/Adolescence and Young Adulthood (AYA)
- Rachel Bishop (Lakewood Career Academy) – Mathematics/AYA
- Justin Brooks (Lochburn Middle School) – Social Studies – History/Early Adolescence (EA)
- Shasta Christensen (Oakbrook Elementary School) – Literacy: Reading-Language Arts/Early and Middle Childhood (EMC)
- Gregory Nelson (Harrison Preparatory School) – English Language Arts/AYA
- Michelle Leingang (Park Lodge Elementary School) – Generalist/Early Childhood (EC)
- Anne Rainwater (Woodbrook Middle School) – Exceptional Needs Specialist/Early Childhood through Young Adulthood

CPSD Winter Break office schedule

The December issue of Inside Schools, Clover Park School District’s community newsletter, incorrectly listed the closure dates of district offices during Winter Break. The district’s Student Services Center and Auxiliary Services Center offices will be open Wednesday, Dec. 26 through Friday, Dec. 28. Offices will be closed Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1. Schools will be closed for Winter Break beginning Thursday, Dec. 20 through Wednesday, Jan. 2. School will resume on Jan. 3. We apologize for any confusion.

Five CPSD schools named 2012 Schools of Distinction

Five Clover Park School District schools—Beachwood, Oakwood and Southgate Elementary Schools; Hudtloff Middle School and Lakes High School—were named 2012 Schools of Distinction from The Center for Educational Effectiveness (CEE), Association of Educational Service Districts (AESD), Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP), Phi Delta Kappa-Washington Chapter (PDK-WA), Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA), Washington State ASCD and Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA).
Lakes High School to host Northwest Drill and Rifle meet Dec. 8

The Lakes High School JROTC will host a Puget Sound Division Drill Meet on Saturday, Dec. 8, at Lakes High School (10320 Farwest Dr SW in Lakewood). The Puget Sound Division is one of three divisions in the Northwest Drill and Rifle Conference. The competition scheduled for last January was cancelled due to weather, so this will be the first year that a Puget Sound Division Drill Meet will be held at Lakes.
CPSD selects Korsmo Construction for JBLM schools
Tacoma-based Korsmo Construction has been selected by the Clover Park School District to build two new elementary schools on the grounds of Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The construction contract value is approximately $48 million.
The schools – Clarkmoor and Greenwood – will total more than 146,000 square feet and will house 1100 students in grades K-5. [Download PDF renderings of Clarkmoor and Greenwood.]
Clover Park Board awarded for distinction by state association
