The Clover Park School District Board of Directors received an Honorable Mention in the Magna Awards 2012 recognition program for its work to increase and support community partnerships. This entry, along with other winners, will be listed in a special supplement to the May 2012 issue of American School Board Journal.

The board of directors encouraged administrative staff to seek methods to maximize and utilize community and district resources by looking at ways to pursue, research, implement and sustain partnerships for the benefit of students. These partnerships have resulted in better communication and coordination between the organizations and the district. Collaborations have also resulted in more resources benefitting students. 

Caring for Kids has had a very busy year. In Clover Park School District alone 71% of the kids are on free and reduced lunch with 95% of that number being free. Being an all volunteer organization we work every day helping our kids in need. Since the first day of school in September, working directly with school staff, we have filled 723 clothing bank orders. The year end total is 1,423 orders for 2011. In August we held the Ready to Learn Fair and participated in two additional events at Springbrook Park and Tillicum Community Center. We helped 2,441 kids with school supplies, backpacks and hygiene products. In 2011with the Ready to Learn Fair and the school supply bank orders we helped a total of 3,485 kids in need with school supplies.

Angelina N. Nockai—daughter of Angelina Nockai, district Native American education specialist—performed a traditional jingle dress dance for students and staff at several elementary schools. Following the performance, Nockai explained the significance of the dance and the regalia. She also read the book Jingle Dancer by Cynthia Leitich Smith, and answered students’ questions about Native American culture.

On Nov. 16, Clover Park School District Superintendent Debbie LeBeau, Director Paul Wagemann and several district administrators met with local legislators to give them the opportunity to visit our schools and see the work being done to increase student success through student achievement, partnerships and community engagement. The event began at Lakes High School—the district’s newest school building—where culinary arts students prepared breakfast and discussed the importance of career and technical education. Ignite Mentors also spoke about their program and how it connects students for success in high school.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we at CISL, would like to thank you for your support as a volunteer, partner or donor.  Hundreds of students are engaged in After-school, Mentor and Readiness To Learn Programs at Tyee Park, Oakwood, Southgate, Tillicum and Lochburn.  Each day CISL Site Coordinators are connecting students and parents with community resources so that, in the end, more students stay in school and graduate on time.

Three Lions Clubs, Lakewood First, Dupont and Lakewood Knights, are working together to provide vision and hearing screenings at schools in Clover Park and Steilacoom School Districts. Public schools are one of the pillars upon which a community is built. While the Clover Park School District has seen improvement in many areas over the last few years, much remains to be done. Of the many ways a community can help a school district, ensuring high achieving students have access to high level coursework and motivated teachers (thus remaining in the district), ranks high. That is why the Rotary Club of Lakewood partnered with the Clover Park School District nearly five years ago with the goal of bringing the International Baccalaureate (IB) program to the district. IB is an international, standards-based, education curriculum with exceedingly high standards. Click here for more information.

The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) officially launched the Jobs for Washington’s Graduates (JWG) program, a chapter of the National Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) Dropout prevention program at the Museum of Flight on Oct. 21, 2011 in front of more than 200 attendees.

Clover Park and Lakes High Schools will select their 2011-12 Daffodil Princesses in November. Clover Park's ceremony is Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in the high school's Performing Arts Center (11023 Gravelly Lake Drive SW in Lakewood). Lakes' ceremony is Monday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. in the high school's Performing Arts Center (10320 Farwest Drive SW in Lakewood). The Lakes High School Dance and Cheer Teams are hosting their 6th Annual winter clinic Dec. 30 and 31 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the high school (10320 Farwest Drive SW in Lakewood). For $35, participants will receive a t-shirt, learn a warm up routine, dance and cheer techniques and a special routine that will be performed at the Jan. 6 boys’ basketball game against Auburn Mountain View and at the Lakes Dance Competition on Jan. 7. Clover Park School District is partnering with Pacific Market Research to conduct a telephone community perception survey among community members regarding impressions and opinions of the district. Community members are encouraged to take a few minutes to complete the anonymous, 35-question survey.

Clover Park School District's Financial Services Department received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association and the Association of School Business Officials International. This is the 12th consecutive year the district has received this award, which is given to governmental entities whose comprehensive annual financial reports achieve the highest standards in governmental accounting and financial reporting.

The event featured welcome remarks from Principal Deb Shanafelt, Superintendent Debbie LeBeau, CPTC Vice President of Instruction Lori Banaszak and Northwest Career and Technical High School (NWCTHS) Director Loren Davis. It’s not too late to register for the upcoming free workshops for parents and volunteers—Saturday, Oct. 1 at Evergreen Elementary School on Joint Base Lewis-McChord and Saturday, Oct. 8 at Lakeview Hope Academy in Lakewood. The workshops will teach participants how to help with homework; math and reading strategies and how to prepare for life after high school. Free lunch and childcare will be provided.

In an effort to continually boost student math achievement, Clover Park School District staff adopted a new program called Show Me the Math—originally developed in Tacoma Public Schools. Show Me the Math is a community scavenger hunt focused on finding real-life, practical uses of math skills through partnerships with local businesses.

The Clover Park School District Board of Directors will hold a special meeting/workshop at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 12 in room 18 at the Student Services Center, 10903 Gravelly Lake Drive SW in Lakewood. The meeting will be conducted prior to the board’s regularly scheduled meeting at 6 p.m.

Clover Park School District officials are hosting a public comment session on the adoption of the Region 5 Hazard Mitigation Plan on Friday, Sept. 2 from 8 to 10 a.m. in room 6B of the Student Services Center, 10903 Gravelly Lake Drive SW in Lakewood.

The Region 5 Hazard Mitigation Plan was created by local government agencies, including Clover Park School District, to address the effects of natural disasters. Comments should be specific to Clover Park School District.
