Clover Park High counselor Daniel Million used these words to describe Ga-Young Jin, who was awarded Lakewood Rotary's Student of the Month award at the club's meeting on Friday, October 21. Rotarian Robert Peterson read further comments from Mellion, noting that Ga-Young was #1 in her class with a 4.0 GPA, has been class president every year at CP, and she has played varsity tennis for four years running.  She is National Honor Society Vice President, and a member of the Key Club as well.  "Ga-Young is the full package that colleges and communities like Lakewood are looking for: intelligent and involved, full of heart.  She is an amazing young lady and I know she will do amazing things with her career," wrote Million.

In mid-May, 16 students from Elizabeth Devitt’s marine biology class at Clover Park High School left the classroom and boarded the Carlyn, a 61 foot sailing research vessel operated by Salish Sea Expeditions.

Prior to the trip, the Salish team assisted the students in designing a research project as part of their science curriculum. Throughout the trip, students collected samples and get to know the marine ecosystem—analyzing as they went, and reflecting on whether their data supported or refuted their initial predictions. Students also had the opportunity to check out the microscopic plants and animals and observe seals, sea lions and marine birds.

More than 160 Clover Park High School Air Force JROTC cadets participated in the annual Pass in Review ceremony May 26. The ceremony is the culminating project for the students, and allows the outgoing commander to see his/her cadets for the last time and the incoming commander to see his/her cadets for the first time. Outgoing Commander Cadet Lt. Col. Jesus Rosales relinquished his command to incoming Commander Cadet Lt. Col. Lourina Foster.

Brayan Lopez, a ninth-grader from Clover Park High School, won second-place in the "Color" category at the Washington State High School Photographic Competition on May 7. Lopez was one of 39 winners out of 4,000 entries in 13 categories. His work will be part of a year-long, statewide traveling show, which will include an exhibit at the Tacoma Art Museum this September and the Seattle Art Museum this December. Lopez will be honored at an awards ceremony June 2 from 7-9 p.m. at Museum Quality Framing in Seattle.

Eighty-three graduates from Clover Park and Lakes High Schools were recognized at a dessert reception May 18 at Clover Park (download program). Honor graduates are those students who have maintained a cumulative 3.5 grade point average throughout their high school careers. At the ceremony, each graduate’s accomplishments and future plans were announced to the audience and honor medallions from each school were presented to the graduates by board vice president Carole Jacobs and board member Paul Wagemann.

In an effort to thank Clover Park High School students and staff for their support of servicemen and women, Captain Tammy Childs—daughter of school nurse Sue Biles—presented Principal John Seaton with a flag flown in Afghanistan.

Students from the school’s Air Force JROTC classes and school staff members sent 150 homemade stockings filled with gadgets and treats to members of the 31st Combat Support Hospital (CHS), who distributed the stockings to wounded Marines being treated at Camp Dwyer in Afghanistan.

The dream of attending college has become a reality for four Clover Park School District students who earned Act Six scholarships to attend Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) and Northwest University.

Three Clover Park High School seniors—James Mamerto, Jesus Rosales and Miguel Smith—will attend PLU. Lakes High School senior Cindy Ramirez will attend Kirkland’s Northwest University. In total, 48 high school seniors from the Puget Sound area and Spokane earned full-need scholarships, partnered with college preparation assistance, peer support and leadership training.

Four football players signed letters of intent Feb. 2 to play football at Central Washington, Pacific Lutheran (PLU) and Washington State Universities (WSU). Clover Park's Tana Pritchard and Lakes' Eddie Releford both signed with WSU. Lakes' Kyle Schueler and Daniel Davis signed with Central and PLU, respectively.

Clover Park High School's basketball games against Sumner High School, originally scheduled for Friday, Feb. 4, have been moved to Thursday, Feb. 3. There is no school Feb. 4 due to semester break. Game times and locations remain the same—the boy's will play at Clover Park at 7 p.m. and the girl's will play at Sumner at 7 p.m.
