Bates students to demonstrate how to build a kayak

Posted by | Comments Comments Off

Ever wonder how a kayak is built? At the 17th annual Maritime Fest Aug. 28-29, you can learn how. The Bates Technical College Boatbuilding Program will demonstrate how to construct a 16-foot kayak at the festival. A number of past and current students will display the boats that they have built or restored and will answer questions about the building process from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the wharf next to the Dock Street building by the Foss Waterway Seaport.

Bates has trained boat builders since 1948. Students learn to build and repair all types of boats—from traditional wooden sailboats, large fishing boats and recreational watercraft to fast moving law enforcement rigid-body inflatables. Materials used include wood, fiberglass, composite and aluminum materials. For more information about the boat building program call 253.680.7410.
