National truck driving organization recertifies Bates program
Posted by | CommentsThis month, the Professional Truck Driver Institute granted Bates Technical College’s Commercial Truck Driving-Entry Level program recertification.
PTDI certification, valid for five years, means the career education program meets or exceeds industry standards. The certification also helps ensure graduates are adequately qualified to safely handle the demands of the truck driving profession.
William Balcom, program manager for the Washington State Patrol’s Commercial Vehicle Division, said, “Students who complete the truck driving course from Bates Technical College are well taught and prepared drivers,” he said. “The course sets the standard and exceeds state training requirements in order for a new truck driver to receive his/her commercial driver’s license.”
Invista Performance Solutions open house rescheduled due to weather

Businesses or organizations that need training and education for their workers have a new resource in Pierce County. Invista Performance Solutions is the first collaboration among Pierce County colleges to serve the business community through a single point of contact.
Invista is responsible for centralized coordination of corporate education programs and services that advance businesses by increasing the skills of their workers. This partnership of colleges includes Bates Technical College, Clover Park Technical College, Pierce College District, and Tacoma Community College

Low-income students helped through special services grant
Posted by | CommentsLow income students at Bates and Clover Park Technical Colleges now have access to special services because of the Basic Food Employment and Training (BFET) grant from the Dept. of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Services (FNS).
To be eligible for the grant, students must receive basic food assistance (food stamps) through the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS).

Bates president announces plans to retire
Posted by | CommentsBates Technical College President Lyle Quasim announced at the Sept. 20 Board of Trustees meeting that he will retire effective Jan. 1, 2012. Quasim has served as president since January 2010.
In an effort to help with the transition, Quasim offered to continue as president until the Board of Trustees select a successor. Under Quasim’s leadership, the college has faced record enrollments with decreasing state budgets.

Governor Gregoire reappoints Calvin Pearson to Bates Board of Trustees

Governor Chris Gregoire recently reappointed Calvin Pearson to the Board of Trustees of Bates Technical College for a five-year term. Pearson is a Commercial Banking Officer and Vice President at Columbia Bank. Active in the Tacoma-Pierce County community, he is a member of the Tacoma-Pierce County Black Collective; Tacoma Urban League; Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber; Group Health Leadership Advisory Group, and more. Pearson serves on the board for The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation and the Economic Development Corporation for Tacoma Pierce County. He is also a senior fellow of the American Leadership Forum and a past board member of South Sound Outreach Services and Communities in Schools. Originally appointed by Governor Gregoire in 2006, Pearson’s reappointment is subject to state senate confirmation.

KBTC Public Television reels in another Emmy Award

Representatives from KBTC accepted their statuette at the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awards ceremony on Saturday, June 11 in Snoqualmie.

Aerospace mobile training unit makes a stop at Bates
