Bair Bistro - Steilacoom Chamber014

Forty-three members and guests of the Steilacoom Chamber of Commerce enjoyed a “Spring Evening at The Bair” on Thursday, April 22.  Representing the Port of Tacoma, Connie Bacon was the featured guest speaker during the dinner.  She stated that the Port is currently conducting a “nationwide search for a new CEO who is trustworthy, who will tell us the right story in business for the Port of Tacoma, who understands strategic thinking, and is a go-getter.” According to Bacon, the Port of Tacoma is “beginning to see a tiny rise in activity, but anticipates steady growth over the next five years.”  She added that the Port has spent $170M to clean-up Puget Sound and Commencement Bay.  There are ongoing negotiations with the Puyallup Tribe about possibly operating a terminal, as well.  Bus tours of the Port of Tacoma are available to the public and scheduled every couple of months.

Johnson Farm Crop Circle 5

From Sarah Garmire

The Anderson Island Historical Society’s Johnson Farm is one of 25 Seattle – Puget Sound area organizations in the running for a grant totaling $1 million. We have asked for $67,000, which will go a long way toward keeping our museum’s many antique farm buildings standing. This restoration grant is sponsored by American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Here’s the twist: To win our grant, the general public has to vote. Voting happens online at www.partnersinpreservation.com. People can (and should) vote every day from now through May 12.

In addition, we are holding a gala open house on Saturday, May 1 at the farm. All are cordially invited to attend. We are celebrating our 35th year as a historical society, there will be a plant sale, live entertainment, special guests who helped form the society and free refreshments. This event is free and open to the public. There is more information on the Partners in Preservation website as well as our website (andersonislandhs.org).

AI principal Nancy McClure welcomed parents, students and community friends to the school’s traditional promotion event that was held in the school’s multi-purpose room on June 5.
