Alumns keep their eyes on the ball

The 18th annual Steilacoom High School alumni basketball game. The game was played on Dec. 30 at the school's gym, and halftime entertainment included presentation of the Steilacoom Historical Education Foundation's Alumni Award Presentation. (Read that story elsewhere in this issue).

Youth Indoor Soccer - Boys and girls ages 4-7 can play soccer inside with this Pierce County Parks and Recreation indoor soccer program. The fee for the program is $45 per participant, register January 9-20. Registration, practices, and games are held at the Lakewood Community Center, 9112 Lakewood Drive SW in Lakewood. TNT: Ryan Moore's golf business acquires Oakbrook Golf and Country Club
Posted by | CommentsThe long-struggling Oakbrook Country Club has been purchased by the newly formed RMG Golf Course Management. Puyallup native, and PGA Tour Pro Ryan Moore, is one of 14 partners who came together to form RMG this golfing off-season. The deal, which was announced on Thursday, brings with it the launch of the RMG Club. Prior to buying Oakbrook, RMG had signed on to manage Spanaway's Classic Golf Club and Port Orchard's McCormick Woods. Read more details of the deal in the story from The News Tribune website.
Kidz Love Soccer

This instructional program teaches soccer skills and techniques needed to participate with other players in games, at school, and on teams. Participants are divided into age groups ranging from 2 years to 6 years. The program is $55 for 6 weeks and is held on Wednesday afternoons starting Nov 9 in the Lakewood Community Center gymnasium, 9112 Lakewood Drive SW in Lakewood. 2015 U.S. Open logo unveiled

As excitement builds for the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, Pierce County and the USGA are ready to introduce the championship logo to the community.
The logo, which features Chambers Bay's trademark sails, will begin appearing on select pieces of merchandise in the Chambers Bay golf shop in October, with more expected to be available by Christmas. Until then, the logo can be seen here. Read More→
Pierce College seeks nominees for 2012 Athletics Hall of Fame

Pierce College is now taking nominations of exceptional athletes, coaches, and program supporters for the 2012 Raider Athletics Hall of Fame induction in April. Nominations must be submitted by Dec. 1 for consideration.
Raider Ride from Puyallup to Fort Steilacoom campus

If you love tight pants and the wind in your hair, Pierce College is the place to be Oct. 1. Pierce College’s Raider Ride will take cyclists on a leisurely journey from Pierce College Puyallup, through the wilds of Puyallup, Spanaway, Parkland, and Lakewood, to Pierce College Fort Steilacoom.
This 20-mile, campus-to-campus ride is easy, fun, and open to all riding levels. For more experienced riders, a 50-mile loop is available from Pierce College Fort Steilacoom. (Maps of both routes are available on the ride website at www.pierce.ctc.edu/other/
PLU Basketball Skills Camp

Boys and girls ages 8-12 can learn new skills from the players of the Pacific Lutheran University Men’s Basketball team. Local youth named to All-Star bowl
Posted by | CommentsMarquise Petty, 12, of Tacoma has been named to the 3rd Annual Offense-Defense Youth All-American Bowl. Marquise, a linebacker for Lancer Steilacoom Youth Football will join dozens of peers in his age group nationwide in an East meets West clash that is park of a week long series of events leading up to the nationally-televised, 6th-annual Offense-Defense All-American Bowl, an All-Star football game of similar format showcasing 80 of the top high school seniors in the country. Marquise was selected from a group of young athletes numbering in the thousands across the country to participate in this one-of-a-kind All-Star game.
Paint the Park Purple raises more than $19,000 for UWT
Posted by | CommentsUniversity of Washington Tacoma’s recent Paint the Park Purple fundraiser generated more than $19,000 for scholarships.
The July 30 event at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma drew more than 565 Husky supporters as the Tacoma Rainiers beat the Las Vegas 51s by a score of 12 to 1.
Girls volleyball league registration open
Posted by | CommentsRegistration for the RAGE Girls Volleyball League in the Puyallup and Parkland communities will be held on September 17th at Puyallup High School from 8:30am-12:15pm.. League play is offered for girls in grades 3rd-9th in both the elementary and junior high divisions. Cost is $40 and includes a t-shirt, an instructional clinic, and seven matches.
An instructional clinic by members of the Puyallup High volleyball team will be held on September 197h from 9:00am-10:30am for students in grades 3rd-45h and from 10:45am-12:15pm for students in grades 6th-9th. Volunteer coaches are also being sought. Over 400 girls participated in the league last year. Lakes grad Rick Austin to be inducted into WSU Athletic Hall of Fame

Lakes High School 1965 graduate Rick Austin is among those to be inducted into the Washington State University Athletic Hall of Fame
next month.
The induction will take place Sept. 9 in Spokane. The next day, inductees will be in Pullman on the WSU campus for various activities, including a WSU football game.

Posted by | CommentsThe Tacoma-Pierce County Volleyball Officials Board is in need of individuals who are interested in officiating middle school, junior high, senior high, college, and recreation department volleyball matches throughout Pierce County. A comprehensive training program, starting August 22nd, is offered for all new officials and the opportunities to advance in the organization are extensive.
