The 18th annual Steilacoom High School alumni basketball game. The game was played on Dec. 30 at the school's gym, and halftime entertainment included presentation of the Steilacoom Historical Education Foundation's Alumni Award Presentation. (Read that story elsewhere in this issue).

As excitement builds for the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, Pierce County and the USGA are ready to introduce the championship logo to the community.

The logo, which features Chambers Bay's trademark sails, will begin appearing on select pieces of merchandise in the Chambers Bay golf shop in October, with more expected to be available by Christmas. Until then, the logo can be seen here. (more...)

If you love tight pants and the wind in your hair, Pierce College is the place to be Oct. 1. Pierce College’s Raider Ride will take cyclists on a leisurely journey from Pierce College Puyallup, through the wilds of Puyallup, Spanaway, Parkland, and Lakewood, to Pierce College Fort Steilacoom.

This 20-mile, campus-to-campus ride is easy, fun, and open to all riding levels. For more experienced riders, a 50-mile loop is available from Pierce College Fort Steilacoom. (Maps of both routes are available on the ride website at www.pierce.ctc.edu/other/raiderride.)

An instructional clinic by members of the Puyallup High volleyball team will be held on September 197h from 9:00am-10:30am for students in grades 3rd-45h and from 10:45am-12:15pm for students in grades 6th-9th.  Volunteer coaches are also being sought. Lakes High School 1965 graduate Rick Austin is among those to be inducted into the Washington State University Athletic Hall of Fame
next month.

The induction will take place Sept. 9 in Spokane. The next day, inductees will be in Pullman on the WSU campus for various activities, including a WSU football game.

They just graduated high school, but the fun isn't over for Lakes' Kyle Schueler and Eddie Releford, who will play in the high school football All-Star Game July 1 at Eastern Washington University. The pair will practice this week in Spokane, along with the other top senior players from the state. Schueler will play at Central Washington University this fall. Releford plans to walk-on at Washington State University. Read more information about the game.

Dillon Gee, a senior baseball player from Lakes High School, is the Tacoma Athletic Commission athlete of the year and played in the All-Star Baseball Tournament in Yakima June 10 and 11, scoring a two-run homer and being named "Player of the Game."

Since 1990 bicyclist from all over the Northwest have participated in the Tour de Pierce.  This year’s June 26 date will include 30 and 50 mile marked routes.  The 12 mile route is designed for families or for those new biking.  All routes include a rest stop with refreshments and rest rooms. The ride starts and finishes at the Western Washington Fair Grounds, S Meridian & 9^th Ave SE, Puyallup.  The fee, paid the day of event, is $17 per rider  or $51 for a family of 4.  A limited supply of tee shirts are available for purchase for $15.  New this year, is a commemorative bike jersey, available on line only.
