A defensive miscue early in the second half caused what could have been an opportunity for the Tacoma Tide FC to end the 2010 United Soccer League’s Premier Development League season with at least a 1:1 draw turn into a 3:2 loss by the visiting Kitsap Pumas.

Tide keeper shines on big stage

Just one day after the Tacoma Tide FC played a PDL regular season match in the race for the playoffs, Jordan Jennings was on the biggest stage against one of the most famous clubs in the world. With an injury to Kasey Keller and a red card to Terry Boss, the man holding the gloves was Jordan Jennings. The Tide’s all-time leader in goal keeper saves, shutouts, and minutes, ended up shining for 60+ for the Sounders FC in front of 45,000 fans.

3 on 3 basketball tournament

Crash the boards on August 28th with a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, sponsored by Pierce County Parks and Recreation. The tournament is held on the outdoor courts at Sprinker Recreation Center, 14824 S C St, Parkland/Spanaway. The tournament is for male and females, with divisions for ages 12 and older. Saudia James-Heard is running fast

On July 3rd, 2010 Lakewood’s Saudia James-Heard took 1st place in the 400m race (1:06:4), 1st place in long jump (12′9″), 2nd Place in the 200m race (29:3). Onward to Nationals! Saudia’s parents are Stephanie and Tony Heard.

20th Tour de Pierce rolls June 27

Several hundred bicyclists will be rolling through the Puyallup Valley Sunday, June 27 as participants in the 20th annual Tour de Pierce family bike ride. Open to all levels of riders, the event starts at 7:30 a.m. in the “Gold” parking lot at the Puyallup Fair and Events Center and concludes at 2:30 p.m.

Riders choose between 12-, 30- and 50-mile routes. The 12-mile route provides a flat, easy ride suitable for families and new riders. All routes include a rest stop with refreshments. To celebrate 20 years, the first 500 riders will receive reusable bags courtesy of REI and a chance to win other prizes. Registrations will be accepted between 7:30 and 11:30 a.m. at the event. The cost is $17 per rider and $48 for families of four. A limited supply of T-shirts will be available for an additional $15. The start is located at 110 9th Ave, S.W., in Puyallup, WA 98371.

3-on-3 basketball tournament

The Seattle Storm is sponsoring a 3-on-3 basketball tournament Saturday, June 26, at SummerFEST for kids ages 10 – 15, as well as all adults, and the championship games will be played before a Seattle Storm home game at KeyArena. Registration is FREE for all teams that participate and the first games will begin at noon.

IBL all-time leading scorer to retire after 2010 season

A staple in Tacoma-area basketball is putting an end to his professional playing career. Dontay Harris, the International Basketball League’s all-time leading scorer and a four-time league all-star selection, is calling it quits.

Over the past six seasons in the IBL, the 32-year-old Harris has tallied 2435 points in a total 106 games. During that span, Harris donned uniforms for Tacoma’s Thunder, Jazz and Tide. His best season offensively came in a Jazz uniform in 2007, when the power forward averaged 21.2 points in 18 contests.

Tide FC beat Victoria 1-0

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – For 58 minutes, all indications were that a rainy Sunday afternoon soccer game filled with sloppy play between the Tide FC and the Highlanders was going to result in a scoreless draw. That’s when Tacoma forwards Rory Agu and Chris Sanders changed everything. With possession nearing the left corner, Agu rifled a long cross into the box, finding Sanders. At point-blank range within the middle of the goal box, Sanders took the ball and buried it in the back left corner of the net with a header, beating a helpless Brandon Watson in goal for the Highlanders to give Tacoma the game’s lone score.

LPD beat LFD 65-51

Playing before a near capacity crowd, the Lakewood Police Department outscored the Lakewood Fire Department in their sixth annual charity basketball game at Pierce College’s gym Saturday. Final score was 65-51.

With feelings still extremely strong in the community after the killing of four police officers and Police Chief Bret Farrar and his wife both undergoing cancer treatments, both the players and the crowd in attendance showed a lot of emotion. A silent auction and raffle brought in additional funds.

University Place – When Tacoma goalkeeper Spencer Richey saw his former team on the schedule, he was quick to make a statement. “I requested this one,” said Richey. And when Tacoma needed the former U.S. National Team U-17 netminder the most, he delivered, ensuring a 1-0 victory against the Washington Crossfire in the 91st minute. “The ball was played in, guy had a point-blank shot from like four yards out, five yards out maybe and [Richey] makes a great save and puts it around the post,” said Tide FC head coach Gerry Gray. “What can you say? The kid was brilliant tonight.”

“When I saw the ball pop out I just tried to gain as much ground as I could and stay big and luckily he hit it off me,” said Richey. Getting Tacoma out in front was forward Brandon Blanks. Taking a ball flicked on in the box in the fight minute by Brayton Knapp, Blanks capitalized on a little separation, burying a low line drive in the back left of Washington’s goal. Tide Regain Winning Touch

The Tacoma Tide FC were 15-0-2 on their home turf from 2007 until the start of 2009. The Tide lost their home dominance at Curtis High School Stadium last year, but after one match at home in 2010, it seems the Tide have regained their home form.

The Tide’s glory years were with players like Spencer Schomaker, Rafael Cox, and company leading the charge. After a season with other pro teams, Schomaker and Cox are both back and they’ve brought wins with them. The goal scoring began in the 18th minute. Xan Nixon, a St. Martins product won the ball in midfield and found Tide veteran, Chase Tangney, on the right wing. Tangney crossed a ball into the box to the on-rushing Schomaker who gave the Tide an early advantage.

Tide fall to Reign 92-97

University Place, Wash. – A 21-7 second-half run wasn’t enough Thursday night for the Tacoma Tide as the team dropped its ninth straight game, this time at home to the Olympia Reign 97-92. “It’s a matter of executing every time down the floor. We have to come down defensively every time and say ‘hey we’re not going to give you a good percentage shot,’ and then you have to execute it that way,” said Tide assistant coach Bob Niehl. Olympia (9-2) got out to a hot start thanks to 32 first-half points by Nate Menefee, with eighteen of the 5-foot-10 guard’s 32 coming from behind the arch. University Place, Wash. – An early second-quarter lead by the Tide vanished in what seemed like mere seconds as the visiting Bellingham Slam took the lead and never looked back, as they downed the Tide at Curtis High School 116-95. “We lost energy,” said Tide head coach Mark Lovelady. “Our guys just came out and stopped doing what we do well.”

Tide fall to Pumas

Bremerton, Wash. – The Tide FC kicked off the 2010 regular season with a new coach and an aggressive, attacking style of play, but two first-half goals were all Kitsap needed to slam the door on Tacoma’s opening of the USL Premier Development League season, as the Pumas downed the Tide FC 3-0, a margin much larger than the share of chances.

Soccer registration is open

Registration for the Lakewood-Steilacoom-Dupont Soccer Club is open for the 2010 season. Registration is open to boys and girls 4-17 years of age and is open online at www.lakewoodsoccerclub.org.

Home games are played at Fort Steilacoom Park with the season beginning in early September. Returning players are guaranteed a spot on their previous team if they register by June 1st.

Pierce athletes to be inducted in NWAACC Hall of Fame

Pierce College athletics standouts Tami Kampbell and Aretha Williams, and the entire 1982 Raider softball team will be inducted in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Hall of Fame on June 3. The banquet and induction ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Bellevue Red Lion.

“This is a huge honor for our athletes and the entire Raider athletic program,” said Athletic Director Duncan Stevenson. “The NWAACC Hall of Fame is a prestigious group of the best in community college athletics, and these athletes represent Pierce College very well.”

Warriors train for first Warrior Games adaptive sports competition

WARRIOR TRANSITION BATTALION, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. — The Warrior Transition Battalion will send eight Warriors to the Warrior Games May 10-14 as members of the U.S. Army team. The Warriors were selected to represent the Army in adaptive sports events at Colorado Springs, Colo. The games are part of an effort to inspire recovery, capitalize on physical fitness, and promote new opportunities for growth and achievement for injured, ill, and wounded service members.

Tide Comeback Falls Short

TacomaTideSports.com – For the first time in the regular season, Tide fans got to watch the yellow and blue play at their new home: Curtis High School. Fans were not disappointed by the show that exhibited sharp shooting, blocked shots, dunks, and a thrilling comeback finish. Unfortunately for the Tide, the late rally fell short of a complete turnaround as they fell to the Yamhill Highflyers 124 to 111. The Tacoma Tide trailed by over 20 points in the 4th quarter, but behind multiple 3 point shots from Jameel “Quick” Shareef, and devastating penetration from Antwan Williams, they got within reach of a the lead but could not pull out the victory.

The Lakewood Steilacoom DuPont Soccer Club will host a Referee Clinic June 4-6 at the Lakewood Fire Station (8517 Washington Blvd). Tide beat Reign 101-90

The Tacoma Tide won their first game of the 2010 season at Olympia on Friday. The victory came exactly one week after the Tide went to Olympia and lost by just two points. Like the last matchup, this game had twelve lead changes. The rematch also had twelve ties in a back and forth affair. Unlike last week, this time the Tide came out with exceptional energy and were able to spurt out to an early lead. However, their largest lead would not come until the final whistle blew.

UW Husky head coaches take the stage

Lorenzo Romar, head UW men’s basketball coach, and Steve Sarkisian, head football coach, will stop in Tacoma on a spring tour of the region, inviting fans to meet and mingle with them. Huskies Celebrating Huskies is scheduled for 6 p.m., May 11, in Philip Hall on the UW Tacoma campus. The event begins with the arrival of the coaches in a special Husky-wrapped bus, followed by a reception and dinner program of Husky talk and questions from fans. Huskies Celebrating Huskies will also travel to Portland, May 3; Bellingham, May 18; and Yakima, May 20. The event will meet in different sites in successive years. Roller Derby at Pierce College

Get ready for a flurry of skates, skirts and sirens at the Dockyard Derby Dames 2nd bout of the season. This bout matches up the Trampires vs. Marauding Mollys, and Femme Fianna vs. Hellbound Homewreckers. Doors open on Saturday, April 24 at 5 pm, bout begins at 6 pm at Pierce College. The new 3 Chicks Catering BBQ Mobile will be serving up incredible plates of BBQ hot off the grill. Plus our bigger and better beer garden will be fully stocked with $3 beers. Tickets are $15 at the door and only $12 when you buy them online. Children 7 and under are free. A portion of the proceeds benefit Pierce County AIDS Foundation. Lakewood Baseball to hold jamboree

Lakewood Baseball and Softball Club is holding its Season Opening Jamboree Saturday, April 17th at Ft Steilacoom Park. The season opens with Jamboree ceremonies starting at 9 a.m. to include introduction of the teams and first pitches by the Mayor of Lakewood Doug Richardson and the Lakewood Police Chief Bret Farrar, with Baseball and Fastpitch Softball games starting at 10 am and continuing throughout the day. Lakewood Police Department Community Services officer and Rhubarb and the Fun Squad from the Tacoma Rainier’s will also be on hand for the festivities. The club will also be holding its used equipment exchange where equipment that is no longer needed from older players can be brought to a collection point and younger players can receive the gently used gear. All left over gear will be donated to a local charity.
