Solemnity exemplified in Flag Retirement Ceremony
Posted by | CommentsSuch a large part of our local community is comprised of military families and retirees. However, even for those who may have never served in the armed forces, there is a reverence for the American flag. There is an established protocol for the proper destruction, i.e. 'retirement' of tattered old flags. They should never be discarded. The American Legion, Doughboy Memorial Post 138, in University Place is a drop site for flags to ensure their proper disposal.
UP Senior Center fundraising double-hitter

The University Place Senior Center was transformed into a lively dining hall festooned with fresh flowers and cookie baskets atop red-and-white table linens. The center hosted a fundraising double-hitter on a recent, rainy Tuesday afternoon with a Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction raising more than $1,000.

A circus-themed open house event was held at the Lakewood Senior Activity Center recently. Featured were agencies, businesses, and other organizations that serve seniors in Lakewood and the surrounding region.
Health care providers included senior living communities and home care services, footwear, grief support, hearing services, and even the fire department had tabletop displays of their informational materials.

A mini-Monet garden

Across the road from the Wastewater Plant are mounds (stalks?) of brilliant yellow iris--so I guess you could say we have a mini-Monet garden in our neighborhood. Gold blooms on scotch broom, purple pipes at the plant--and plenty of green--hey, those are the Mardi Gras colors, too. Laissez le bontemps rollez!
Steilacoom mill burns
Posted by | CommentsA thick column of black smoke rose from the former pulp mill near Chamber Bay in Steilacoom on Friday. KIRO 7 has an uncut video feed of 2+ minutes and a story stating the fire could burn for days as "there's no water source in the area."

Leslie Espinoza, a junior from Lakes High School, recently served as a page for Rep. Bruce Chandler in Olympia.
Espinoza, daughter of Joel and Sonia Espinoza, attended a daily page school to learn about the legislative process. As part of her duties, she distributed documents and notes to lawmakers and staff on the House floor, as well as around the Capitol campus.
District administrators thank legislators for support of military families
