John Unfred, Treasurer, Lakewood Officers' Charity

The Lakewood Officers’ Charity was shocked and outraged when we first learned about the allegations of theft of donated funds intended for the Charity. Federal prosecutors have charged Skeeter Manos with ten counts of wire fraud. Manos was the Treasurer of the Lakewood Police Independent Guild, but has never been a member of the Charity’s executive board. Since being notified, we have fully and completely cooperated with the investigation. We will refer all questions pertaining to the investigation to the U.S. Attorneys’ Office.

Most Americans would prefer to remain in their own home for as long as possible. One way that people can do that is a “Reverse Mortgage.” Knowing the fundamentals about Reverse Mortgages can make for a solid decision and prevent major problems. A Reverse Mortgage enables seniors 62 or older to access their home equity for a variety of purposes.

Pierce County Community Connections Aging & Disability Resources is sponsoring “Reverse Mortgages: A Primer for Consumers” as part of the “Know it before you need it” series. The free workshop explains in clear, impartial terms the basic features of a Reverse Mortgage and how one can provide the means to stay in one’s home.

“Many people are apprehensive about getting a Reverse Mortgage,” said Aaron Van Valkenburg, manager of Aging and Disability Resources. “But they can be a prudent way for seniors to tap into a home’s value and provide the means to remain at home without sacrificing anything. When it comes to Reverse Mortgages, knowledge is everything.”

This is the fourth in a series of e-mails that address the reasons given by City Council members for their vote to approve or disapprove the 2011 Settlement Agreement, as reported in the 1/27/2012 South Puget Sound News article.

Councilwoman Coffey is quoted as saying: "The settlement agreement will get us a restoration plan, plus forty-five acres on the bluff that will be put into open space. The Growth Management Act by law mandates that cities identify the natural resources, and this (gravel) is a huge resource for our region."

In the second e-mail of this series I address the subject of the "The settlement agreement will get us a restoration plan,...", thus I will not repeat what I have previously stated in this e-mail.

In regard to Councilwoman Coffey's statement that: "The settlement agreement will get us ... forty-five acres on the bluff that will be put into open space." I respond as follows.

The story provided a description of the aftermath of one more reckless driver racing down Gravelly Lake Drive SW. As she sped southbound down on Gravelly Lake Drive SW, which is a 30 M.P.H. zone, she straightened out Gravelly as it bends right towards Nyanza Road SW. She hit the curb, became airborne, sliced the lawn, smashed through the solid brick fence, tore out some trees and landed on a welcome mat to the front door of a residential condominium. The car smashed through the front door and drove inside the home right up to the upstairs staircase.

I am writing as a community member who has been a student in the Clover Park School District in the recent past. I graduated from Lakes High School in 2007, and prior to that attended Hudtloff Middle School, and Idlewild Elementary School. There are many good reasons to pass the upcoming educational programs and operations levy. Eighty percent of levy spending goes to support the classrooms, by maintaining smaller class sizes, purchasing current textbooks, and providing academic and career guidance. The levy also provides support for safety and security, like campus resources officers and fire alarms. Voting yes for the levy is voting yes for the safety of students, and voting yes for supporting all children being able to learn. As a past student I know from personal experience how important it is to learn from current materials, and the importance of small class sizes, and by voting yes you can help to continue to the good work that is already being done in our schools. Please consider this when you vote on the upcoming levy measure. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Alexandra Vlaming

He died from complications of Leukemia. He was 76. John was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma October 2, 1935 to Ethel Mae Miller and Fred Taylor. He graduated from Manuel High School in Denver, Colorado and served four years in the US Coast Guard before heading to the University of Puget Sound on a football scholarship. He received his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and went on to earn his Masters in Forensic Psychology at Pacific Lutheran University. John was the first in his family to graduate from college. He worked at Western State Hospital for 25 years as a therapist for the criminally insane and proudly retired at the age of 55. John was a family man. He married the love of his life, Alice Frances Scott, January 27, 1960 in Tacoma. They celebrated 52 years of marriage days before his death. He was a loving husband and devoted father. He was an optimist who made people think and laugh. And he LOVED great food. John Taylor lived... and enthusiastically inspired his family to do the same. As a young father, John packed up his family and traveled through 48 of the continental United States by the time his five children graduated from high school. He and his loving wife Alice zigzagged across the country making life-long friends along the way. John is survived by his loving wife Alice and five children; Donald Taylor, Terri Chestnut, Janice Stowers and son-in-law Larry Stowers, Joyce Taylor Wallace and son-in-law Calvin Wallace, Robert Taylor and daughter-in-law Tanya Taylor. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren; Dionne, Kristina, Jeremy, Carvell, Bryce, Chase, Miles, Lawrence, Jordan, Shi, Loren and Karsyn and three great grandchildren; Deondre, Jabari and Jaden. He will be deeply missed by those who loved him and fondly remembered by those who were blessed to know him. John's life will celebrated at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lakewood February 4th at 3pm. Visitation -- Friday, Feb. 3rd 1pm-9pm. Donations can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at www.lls.org Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home. 253-584-0252.
