Thanks to the support of Regence Blue Shield of Washington, the 2010 U.S. Amateur is pleased to announce that Wednesday, Aug. 25, will be First Responders Day at the national golf championship.

All active-duty and retired commissioned law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS providers and 911 dispatchers will receive complimentary admission to the U.S. Amateur on Aug. 25. The championship will be held Aug. 23-29 at Chambers Bay in University Place.

National Night Out at North American Lake Park

The Lake City Neighborhood Association and sponsor American Lake Credit Union will host National Night Out activities on August 3 from 4-7 pm at North American Lake Park. There will be games for kids, information booths for adults to learn more about the community plus several city officials and law enforcement folks will be stopping in during the evening.

Summer festival at St. Joseph-St. John

Dog-A-Thon 2010

More than 1,000 pet-lovers and their dogs will gather at Fort Steilacoom Park on Saturday, July 24 for the 20th annual Dog-A-Thon. The canine festival runs from 8:30 am until 1:00 pm. The event includes a one-mile or four-mile walk, vendor booths, demonstrations, entertainment, a barbeque, and activities for the kids. There will also be pet micro-chipping and a Magnificent Mutt Show, with categories for biggest, smallest, most like owner, best dressed, best trick, and more!

Participants have raised pledges for the walk, but all are welcome to attend. Donations will benefit homeless animals in Pierce County. Last year the Dog-A-Thon raised $138,000, which helped the Humane Society find loving homes for than 6,000 pets – including every adoptable dog that entered the shelter. Lions annual garage sale set for July 24

Byrd School marker dedication

A historical marker recognizing the Byrd School will be officially dedicated Monday July 26 by Mayor Doug Richardson and officials from Echelon Apartments and Lakewood Historical Society. The program will get underway at 4 pm.

The marker, located near the site where the school actually stood, is located within the site that today houses the Echelon Apartments at the corner of Steilacoom Boulevard and Lakewood Dr.

PR: 250 Air Force Recruits to be sworn-in at Air Expo 2010

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. – About 250 men and women will start their Air Force career at Air Expo 2010. All will be sworn-in to the U.S. Air Force Delayed Entry Program at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning by Col. Kevin Kilb, 62nd Airlift Wing commander. This enlistment breaks the previous record of 178 recruits swearing-in at the same time. All of the men and women enlisting have come together through recruiting efforts throughout the Pacific Northwest. The enlistment will take place on the Air Expo flightline in front of a large military aircraft static display, just before the aerial acts take to the sky at 11 a.m.

3 on 3 basketball tournament

Crash the boards on August 28th with a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, sponsored by Pierce County Parks and Recreation. The tournament is held on the outdoor courts at Sprinker Recreation Center, 14824 S C St, Parkland/Spanaway. The tournament is for male and females, with divisions for ages 12 and older. SHEF By the Bay Car Show

The Steilacoom Historical Education Foundation (SHEF) will host its By the Bay Car Show on Sunday, July 18, 2010 from 9 AM to 3 PM in downtown Steilacoom (in front of Town Hall). The event is free to the public; $20 participants entry fee. Display of local fire and police departments (LeMay is providing a 1950 Hudson Police Car for display; Gig Harbor is providing a 1945 Fire truck for display; Lakewood Police Department providing a fallen officers car for display). Sheri Lockbaum, Administrative Assistant for the Steilacoom Department of Public Safety, has put together some history of Steilacoom police and fire protection. The Steilacoom High School Key Club (with Steilacoom Kiwanis help) do a fantastic pancake breakfast and hot dogs for lunch. We also have a raffle drawing and a silent auction. Dig out those treasures hidden away in your attics, basements, closets, and garages. Rent a space on the Tennis Court for $10. (Sign up early since the court fills up fast) If you have too many items to bring to the Tennis Court, register with the Chamber of Commerce for only $10 and hold the sale at your residence within the town. Intel Farmers Market features RC rally on Wednesday, July 14

Remote Control? Radio Control? Either way, RC spells fun and RC hobbyists have a chance to show off their buggies, truggies, boats, and aircraft at this week’s Farmers Market at Intel. The rally will feature both static displays and demos of R/C vehicles, so expect a few lid skids and loop de loops. Intel employees as well as members of the public are encouraged to bring their R/C vehicles to the rally. For more information about the RC rally, contact Tammy Garner at 371-7170.

Intel hosts Farmers Markets in the DP3 parking lot every other Wednesday during the summer months. The hours are 11am to 2pm. The markets feature local vendors, artisans and musicians and are open to the public. A BBQ lunch is available, including “homemade” chips, cookies and lemonade (free refills!). Steilacoom Farmers Market open on Wednesday

Maily Cha, 7, tugs on the rope that rings the bell, signaling that Steilacoom’s weekly Wednesday Farmers Market is officially open for business. Maily’s father, Chneneng Cha, a flower vendor at the weekly event, and sell a variety of summery blooms each week. Market patrons are encouraged to experiment with recipes, provided free of charge, using market produce. Steilacoom Salmon Bake set for July 25

The Steilacoom Historical Museum Association (a non-profit celebrating 40 years of preserving Steilacoom history) will be holding its annual fund raising “Salmon Bake” at Sunnyside Beach in Steilacoom, Sunday, July 25th from noon till 4 PM. The cost is $14 for the salmon meal, $6 for a hotdog meal. There will be live entertainment, face painting, balloon art and plenty of small town atmosphere. 253-588-7937 for more information.
