Godinez receives Citizen-Soldier of the Year Award

It is the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber’s honor to present the 2012 Howard O. Scott Citizen-Soldier of the Year Award – this year to an U.S. Air Force Reservist – to a Citizen-Airman. Staff Sergeant Ralph Godinez is responsible for generating orders for missions and pay for members of his 728th Airlift Squadron. Ralph is currently on full time orders with the 728th Airlift Squadron, and is an employee of Comcast.

An Old Fashioned Summer at the pool

It was the summer of 1968 and the pool down the street was about to open.  Having been afraid of the water myself, I felt lucky that my kids would have the opportunity to learn to swim at an early age.  We hardly missed a day that summer and all the summers that followed.  Swim classes later turned into swim team as the years passed far too quickly.  Soon I was taking lessons and loving the water for the first time.  Walking down those steps and gliding into the water was a daily pleasure.  Renewing summer friendships, stretching out with a book in the sun, writing letters...what luxury!  The feeling of an endless summer just like when we were children was possible here.

SBA opens applications for lending pilot program

The Intermediary Lending Pilot Program (ILP), which provides long-term loans to eligible non-profit intermediary lenders to finance their lending to small businesses, has opened a second competitive application period. As a result, small businesses, especially those in underserved markets looking for loans up to $200,000, will soon have access to twice as many community-based funding sources under the U.S. Small Business Administration program.

New salmon hatchery visitor center wins national award

Tacoma Power’s new Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery visitor center made a splash by winning an Outstanding Stewards of America’s Waters (OSAW) Award for Public Education in Washington, D.C. The award was given April 17 by the National Hydropower Association.

The visitor center teaches people about the life cycle of Pacific salmon.
