Today, the U.S. Small Business Administration kicked off its 2012 e200/Emerging Leaders executive-level training initiative in 27 cities and communities. Since 2008 the e200/Emerging Leaders initiative has helped nearly 1,000 promising small business owners in underserved communities across the country sustain and grow their businesses, providing training they use to succeed and create jobs.

“Over the last few years Emerging Leaders has helped expand opportunities for many promising small businesses in underserved communities – in particular those that have been most impacted by these tough economic times,” SBA Administrator Karen Mills said. “Graduates of the program have increased their revenue, created jobs and helped drive local economic growth in their communities. Continuing with this year’s lineup of new classes builds on this success and provides even more entrepreneurs in underserved communities with the support, resources and skills to succeed.”

Story & Photo – Joseph Boyle

Back in about 1989, an enterprising entrepreneur opened a new Lakewood business called Mail Masters, located at 8103 Steilacoom Boulevard SW, Lakewood, Washington 98498. Mail Masters featured mailbox rentals, mail service and package processing along with some general merchandise.

It was about 1998 when Bobby Williams, only 22 years old, purchased the operation and ran Mail Masters for 13 years. He worked hard six days a week with very little vacation time.

I became a customer about ten years ago when the Pony Express Mail Center closed at the Lakewood Mall.

Bobby was always pleasant and helpful during our decade of doing business together.

Well, the bad news caught up with me this past Friday. Bobby is closing Mail Masters on January 31, 2012.

If you get a chance and you know Bobby, stop by and wish him well with his next venture.

Today the Office of Advocacy released the annual Small Business Profiles for the States and Territories. This is the 16th year Advocacy has published a state-by-state profile of American small business for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. The profiles are an invaluable resource for small businesses, legislators, academics, government officials, and policymakers in each state. The Washington profile uses the most recent data available to provide details about the state’s small business employment; business starts and closings; bank lending; business ownership by minorities, women, and veterans; and firm and employment change by major industry and firm size.

“Small businesses are the foundation of economic growth in Washington and in our nation” said Dr. Winslow Sargeant, Chief Counsel for Advocacy. “By supporting policies that promote innovation and entrepreneurship, we help small businesses tackle these challenging economic times. These statistics are a resource for a path to economic growth.”

Economic development officials at the City of Lakewood are in the process of determining the extent of damages to local businesses that resulted from the recent snow and ice storm that hit the south Puget Sound region the week of January 16. If the amount of damages reaches a certain dollar threshold, assistance from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) may be available to help businesses recover from the damages.

The city is currently working to determine how many and to what extent businesses in Lakewood incurred “economic injury” as a result of the severe weather. Economic injury is defined as either a loss of revenues due to an interruption in business activity or physical damage to the business’s property.

In order to make the determination, city officials are asking businesses that incurred damages to complete a worksheet that estimates adverse economic impact and property damage. Forms are available under ‘News Updates’ on the city’s website at: www.cityoflakewood.us. Please email completed worksheets to: mperrussel@cityoflakewood.us or mail to: City of Lakewood, ATTN: Melody, 6000 Main Street SW, Lakewood, WA 98499.

These are not applications for funding, but instead are meant to gather information which the city will submit to the SBA. Business owners with questions can call Melody or Becky at 253.589.2489.

Legitimate-looking websites and classified ads entice pet shoppers with cute puppy pictures, detailed descriptions, and below-average prices. When shoppers contact sellers and attempt to make purchases, they are directed to wire money—typically overseas—to complete paperwork and secure shipping. Buyers then receive emails that contain shipping receipts, animal crate numbers, flight numbers and times, and other seemingly genuine information.

"Trust and patience are critical when searching for doctors," said Robert W.G. Andrew, CEO of BBB serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington. "Sensitive medical information should always be in competent, qualified hands."

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are approximately 97,820 family doctors—also known as general practitioners—operating in the United States, so finding a quality fit may seem like an overwhelming task. Save headaches by considering the following:

Small businesses were hit particularly hard as many were forced to close during these disasters, causing economic injury to many that were already struggling. The factors that cause financial losses after a disaster, however, can be offset by having a recovery plan in place.

Lakewood Water District staff recommended, and the Board of Commissioners approved, the 2012 Budget at the December 15, 2011 Commissioner Meeting. There was extensive effort put into preparing the annual budget. This included a review of the District’s financial standing after its 2011 activities and the direction the District would take financially in 2012, with all this being analyzed and reviewed by the District management and Board of Commissioners. These decisions were made with great diligence and great care as they will directly impact the District’s rate payers for both the short and long term.

This morning on my way to work, I was just turning off Main Street into Starbucks when I spotted the ambulance transporting an elderly gentleman to the hospital.

Our favorite Moon Rise Café, located at 6020 Main Street SW inside the Lakewood Towne Center, had just experienced some bad luck and a whole lot of good luck.

Rather than have me tell the story, let me share with you what MoonRise Café customer, Clifford Benton, had to say.

By Irene Mazer, Lakewood

As you regret the excesses of the holidays, and make all sorts of resolutions to improve your health there is a great facility to help you, whatever your age or physical condition. In my group are several people, including me, who use canes, and we have and have had several people using walkers. The motto is: "Do what you can, but don't overdo and hurt yourself." When our leader introduces a new exercise, she always provides alternatives for those whose whose muscles won't cooperate. (For example: My right arm won't always cooperate in the exercises involving raising one's arms over one's head. There's an alternative for that.)

I just came back from the gym and I'm feeling great. I'm an old lady, trying to keep what little muscle and brain (or is that brain and brawn?) I have left. I've been working out at Vital Fitness, which is right next to the Goodwill, just off Bridgeport on Mt. Tacoma Dr. I've also been reading more and more articles about how aerobic and strength exercises can delay the progress of the debilitating conditions that affect us, including Alzheimer's and some of the digestive system disorders, and many other conditions, named and unnamed. Needless to say, I am not your typical "jock" (or is that "jockette?) and I feel very uncomfortable in most gyms.
