35th annual McChord Retiree Heritage Dinner set for June 22
The McChord Retiree Activities Office is busy planning the 2013 Military Retiree Heritage Dinner, for 22 June at the McChord Co-located Club. This banquet was previously presented as a Military Dining Out, but in recent years became more popular as a Heritage Dinner. For this 35th annual event, the Guest Speaker will be Retired Lt Colonel Edward Saylor, one of only four remaining survivors of the famous Doolittle Raiders. After 28 years of distinguished service in the US Air Force, Lt Colonel Saylor retired in 1967. Among his many decorations are the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Force Commendation Medal (two Oak Leaf Clusters), and the Chinese Army, Navy, and Air Corps Medal.

Lakes senior named JBLM Youth Volunteer of the Year
Andrea Terialles had to be convinced to log her and her family’s many volunteer hours onto the Volunteer Management Information System, the tool used by volunteers across installations worldwide.
“That’s not why we do the service,” Andrea said.
What finally convinced her was the need for the Army to have a record. The hours served by volunteers often lead to decisions about programs, such as funding or the need for paid staff.
Prior to Thursday’s annual Volunteer of the Year Luncheon, she didn’t expect to win, in fact, she admitted that she’d be modestly embarrassed.

Who’s Warren Buffett?
By Nancy Covert
(The following news tip was relayed to this writer during the Kiwanis Egg Hunt at Cherrydale by someone “in the know” who passed it along.) At a recent state dinner held at the White House in early March, Steilacoom’s Medal of Honor recipient SFC. Leroy Petry and his wife, Ashley, were seated among famous folks such as President and Mrs. Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife, and Warren Buffett, to name a few. Mrs. Petry, it’s reported, was most impressed, though, by the presence of George Clooney who also was at that dinner that evening.
