Letter: ‘Gambling … enslaves’
Posted by | CommentsFebruary 23, the world marks the 203rd anniversary of the House of Commons passing Wilberforce’s bill, 1807, ending the slave-trade. Ours is a similar battle. Gambling, and government sponsorship of it, enslaves. “Great leaders who have turned the tide of national and spiritual declension have been men who could get angry at the injustices and abuses which dishonor God and enslave men.” The Book on Leadership, John McArthur.

Tillie’s – Not Your Regular Dinner Show
Posted by | CommentsBy Karen Lebeter
If you weren’t there on February 11, you missed a wonderful show! The Tillie’s Team, again, far exceeded expectations. Shawn, the sound and lighting guy, brought his own $3,000 sound board and wore a tux, believe it or not! He felt his role as Master of Ceremonies was that important and he did not disappoint. He kept everyone entertained and his announcements kept things moving smoothly before the headliner appeared. Shawn recruited two teens who ran the spot lights, house lights and opened the red curtain at the dramatic moment. He introduced Garret “Light My Fire” Smith, standing behind the curtain, with the song used at basketball warmups, “Are You Ready for This?” The spot lights were flashing, moving around the curtain as it was drawn open…really awesome! The food was delicious and abundant, food service was excellent, and cake was served after dinner. The room was romantic and hot, with spring blossoming branches, red berry branches and ornaments, and fire hats on every table. Huge red and blue helium balloons lined the walls.

Public Hearing: Draft Tillicum Neighborhood Plan
Posted by | CommentsThe City of Lakewood is considering final adoption of the draft Tillicum Neighborhood Plan that was issued for public review in April 2009. Numerous plans relating to Tillicum dating back 30 years were reviewed in the plan’s development, which goes on to examine where the neighborhood’s greatest needs lie and suggests targeted public and private actions to build upon community assets – particularly the personal capacities of people; improve infrastructure, including transportation; reduce crime and blight; and redefine commercial and housing areas. Once adopted, the plan will be merged into the City’s comprehensive plan and will direct future zoning and public investment in Tillicum. Since the draft plan was released, numerous public meetings have been held so property owners, business people, and residents of Tillicum could share their thoughts about the plan. Now, a formal public hearing is being held leading up to the plan’s final adoption.

Letter (and response): Reaction to failed gambling bill
Posted by | CommentsHad a recent legislative bill passed, the prospects of gambling expansion state-wide were likely. This last November members of the Lakewood council and city staff attended the regional meeting of the Association of Washington Cities and anticipated the latter’s support of “local control over gambling” at the legislature. But House Bill 2873 wasn’t about Lakewood gaining control over gambling. It was rather about giving gambling control.
I testified against this bill before the House Labor and Commerce Committee this past Wednesday. The bill had four major flaws. One was the 10-year-no-repeal rule. The bill would have tied the city’s hands while giving a free-hand to the casinos for an entire decade. A second reiterated the State Gambling Commission as having sole authority to change the scope of a gambling license. And given recent proposals for expanded gambling before that Commission, as well as intentions by representatives of the casinos to reintroduce slots, the city would have had no say in these matters. Still a third provision of the bill would have allowed existing casinos to relocate within the city. Read More→
Release: ‘Surprising’ facts regarding people found not guilty by reason of insanity
Posted by | CommentsFifty-one percent of individuals charged with a crime who are found not guilty by reason of insanity in Washington come from King County, yet only 35 percent of them are released back to King County when treatment is finished. Those figures are among a number of intriguing statistics disclosed Thursday by Sen. Mike Carrell, R-Lakewood.
“I think the people of Pierce County would find it not at all surprising that our county contributes only 13 percent of the total population of our state’s mental health facilities, yet 41 percent are released onto our streets,” Carrell said. “It’s yet another example of how Pierce County has long been the dumping ground for not only sane criminals, but as we’ve just learned, those found not guilty by reason of insanity as well.” Read More→
