First jail in Washington

Silent Movie Night in Steilacoom

Want a fun, low-cost evening? Try Silent Movie Night at the Steilacoom Historical Museum on Friday, March 12. The show starts at 7 pm and hopefully you won’t have to go into hock to pay to get into the downstairs meeting room: 10-cents per person (and popcorn, water and sodas will be available.

The evenings movie features the 1920 film The Mark of Zorro starring Douglas Fairbanks and Noah Beery. This was the first of three Mark of Zorro films produced. The others were in 1940 starring Tyrone Power and 1974 with Frank Langella. The showing starts at 7 pm in the museum located at 1801 Rainier Avenue, Steilacoom.

After a victory on Saturday night against North Mason, the Steilacoom High School boys’ basketball team is headed to the playoffs. The Sentinels face Mark Morris High School (Longview) in a State 2A championship game that takes place on Wednesday, March 10th at the Sun Dome in Yakima. The game, slated for broadcast on www.bsports.org, begins at 9 p.m.

Starting March 9, Pierce County’s ferry loading ramps at Steilacoom, Ketron, and Anderson Island will undergo preservation work. All work will be performed at night after the last scheduled ferry sailing, and ferry service will not be disrupted.

Work includes repairs to the hydraulic loading ramps to improve function and extend the service life of the machinery. The project will cost $71,000. Federal Transit Authority stimulus grant money will pay for $44,000 and county ferry budget funds will cover the remaining $27,000. Read More→

student Shannon Lynch, a Steilacoom High School senior, was recently recognized as the Rotary Club of Lakewood’s Student of the Month. Rotarian Bob Peterson, a retired Clover Park teacher and principal, made the presentation at the regular Friday noon meeting.

Nominated by Steilacoom High School Principal Jan McKrimmons, Lynch sports a 3.88 GPA. She serves as president of the Senior Class, captain of the cheer squad and serves as Pacific Region summer school liaison for Junior Statesmen of America. She’s not firmly decided on where to attend college but is strongly considering Georgetown University.

The Rotary Club of Lakewood recognizes a student each month from Clover Park and Steilacoom School Districts. A teacher from each district is also recognized each month by the club which has been serving the community for more than 50 years. Greg Horn is currently serving as president of the 125-member organization.

Tuesday night, the Steilacoom Sentinels boys’ basketball team beat North Mason’s squad by a score of 44-39. The Sentinels play rival Fife High School in round 6 of the West Central District 3 playoffs this Friday night. The game at Foss High School in Tacoma starts at 6 p.m.

The Steilacoom Sentinel boys’ basketball team, winners of the Nisqually League championship, is on its way to the West Central District 3 playoffs. With a bye in the first round, the Sentinel team plays their first game on Tuesday, March 2 at Foss High School. Tipoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. They will play the winner of Friday’s Eatonville / North Mason game.

For the 25th consecutive year, Mary Petersen and Steve Behr of the Steilacoom Dance Company, will be featured on their outreach presentations to the Hawaiian islands of Maui, Kauai and Oahu. Planned for mid-April, this year’s theme, Diversity of the Dance, includes tap dancing, flamenco, cha/cha, Sswing, Tango and even a beautiful Hawaiian dance number. An array of original costumes complement each presentation. The team is looking forward once again to sharing and receiving the aloha spirit of respect and having fun.

Track club forms

City of DuPont and All Sports have joined together to offer King Cobras Track Club to Steilacoom, DuPont and Lakewood. The Club will meet April 26 through August 28 with practices on Mondays from 7 pm-8 pm and Saturdays Noon-1:30 pm at Pioneer Middle School (1750 Bob’s Hollow Lane) in DuPont. The King Cobras Track Club is for kids ages 4-18. There is a $100 registration fee (download form) and a $35 meet fee. For registration information, call Parks & Rec at (253) 912-5245. A teacher from the Clover Park School District and one from the Steilacoom Historical School District were recognized recently as Educator of the Month by the Lakewood Rotary Club.

Rotarian and former Clover Park principal Bob Peterson recognized Cozette Shackelford as the Clover Park School District’s Educator of the month and Leann Christensen for the same honor from the Steilacoom Historical School District.

Fans of Steilacoom Chamber of Commerce’s yearly spaghetti feed flocked to the town’s community center on Feb. 19 to enjoy the tasty cuisine, and support two causes: the Chamber’s high school scholarship program, and the Steilacoom Tribal Museum’s restoration efforts.

Each May the Chamber, in partnership with Pierce College, awards four scholarships to graduating seniors.

Before the event’s start, Col. Don Rehburg—past president of the organization and creator of many food items, including his renowned Secret Salmon Sauce and the super spaghetti sauce served that evening—was on hand for a taste test. “Chef” Dennis Mulvaney breathed a sigh of relief when the Colonel gave his “OK.” Read More→
