Cherrydale wins CenturyLink grant

Cherrydale Primary School, a kindergarten through grade 3 school, in the Steilacoom Historical School District, was awarded a $5,000 grant from CenturyLink for student technology. Teachers, Brittany Humphrey, Cindy Lea-Balko, Sylvia Kozyra, Jill Lyons and Brian Kirby wrote and submitted a technology grant to increase the schools’ teaching technology equipment.

Cobalt Mortgage awards $115,700 in scholarships
Cobalt Mortgage Dollars for Scholars, a three-year old non-profit organization, partnered with individual donors, business partners, and the employees of Cobalt Mortgage in the creation of scholarships to help students pursue their post-secondary education goals. This August, over $115,000 in scholarship funds will be distributed to 80 deserving students in the states of Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, Utah, and Oklahoma. That’s more than a two-fold increase over 2012 awards.
Wheaton, Soderberg named Educators of the Month

Steilacoom Chamber Trade Show a hit

Twenty three business members of the Steilacoom Chamber of Commerce participated in the organization’s first ever Trade Show on Wednesday. From 4:30 until 6:30PM, the community was invited to the free show at Oberlin Church where Chamber businesses, many home-based, displayed wares and services and met directly with neighbors, friends and potential clients. Each business provided an item for a raffle which was held throughout the event. Refreshments were provided by The Bair Bistro.
Teens’ talents dazzle in Pierce County Library’s writing and art contest

Talented teenage artists and writers demonstrated their creative skills through original poetry, short story, drawing and photography in Pierce County Library System’s Teen Writing & Art Contest – Our Own Expressions.
“Students dazzle us each year with their amazing writing and art,” said Neel Parikh, executive director for Pierce County Library. “It is a joy and an honor to encourage these promising teenagers to share their talents and continue their creative efforts.”
Steilacoom author wins Christian Choice Book Award
STEILACOOM – Cindy Peak, founder of Frolicking Home, LLC, was awarded the 2013 Christian Choice Book Award for her First Book, “The Little Star that Shines for Jesus.” It’s a charming retelling of the Christmas story from the Star of Bethlehem’s perspective; suitable for ages 3 through 12.
Saltar’s Point Elementary School Principal Recommendation

Steilacoom Historical School District #1 Superintendent Bill Fritz will recommend to the Board of Directors the hiring of Alexander Clauson for the position of Principal of Saltar’s Point Elementary School. The Board will consider the recommendation at its regularly scheduled board meeting on Wednesday, May 22, 2013.
Forbes announces Steilacoom School Board candidacy
DuPont, WA – Thirteen year DuPont resident, Bob Forbes has announced his candidacy for Director Position No. 3 of the Steilacoom Historical School District.
“My priorities as a board member will be to ensure that the curriculum is exceeding the state standards and that no child is lost through the cracks of the educational system; that our school properties are well maintained to provide a safe and welcome environment for our children; and that our extracurricular activities are fully supported so we can provide a well-rounded experience beyond the classroom,” noted Forbes.
Steilacoom Chamber of Commerce Trade Show set for Wednesday

A Trade Show featuring businesses of the Steilacoom Chamber of Commerce will be held on 15 May 2013 from 4:30PM to 6:00PM at Oberlin Church Fellowship Hall, 1603 Rainier Street, Steilacoom. Admission is free to the public. Refreshments will be served and door prizes will be raffled off. Information available at 584-4177.
Steilacoom: Progress at Steilacoom Tribal Museum

Steilacoom’s original Oberlin Congregational Church on Lafayette Street shows signs of long-awaited historic preservation, as the current Steilacoom Tribal Museum and Cultural Center moves ahead with its plans to restore the 1800s structure. A new set of stairs leading to the building’s main entrance has been placed. Watch for further improvements to the museum site.
Around the Sound: Local gardeners purchase pick of Steilacoom plants for their gardens

George Rybolt, creator of the renowned Steilacoom birdhouses, was among the plant shoppers on May 11 in downtown Steilacoom. He was spotted busily loading plants into a car trunk on Saturday morning.
Dozens of local gardeners descended Saturday to the Bair Store lot to scoop up as many clippings, cuttings, pots, bouquets, birdhouses and more at the annual Steilacoom Garden Club plant sale.
