Award-winning author book signings in January

James Keeffe, author of 'Two Gold Coins and a Prayer' will be signing copies of his book at area Costco stores in January.

Keeffe was awarded the 2011 Military Writers Society of America Award for a book about the Air Force.

Sheriff’s Community Academy accepting applicants

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department's Community Academy, which provides an opportunity for citizens to learn about local law enforcement, is accepting applications for two sessions this winter.

South Hill Academy: The Wednesday evening classes begin Jan. 25 and will meet once a week at the South Hill Precinct, 160th and Meridian.

University Place Academy: The Thursday evening classes begin Feb. 23 at the University Place Police Department, 3609 Marketplace W.

Both sessions meet from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

No Sun Fun Run

On Saturday, January 21st, rain, hail, sleet, or snow, the 5K No Sun Fun Run will take place no matter what weather our South Sound winter provides!  The Nathan Chapman Trail provides a flat, paved, stroller friendly route.  The run is non-competitive and is recreationally timed.  All ages and abilities  are welcome.  The $20 pre-registration by January 10th includes a tee shirt. Muri to run in new 10th district

Angel Flight West benefits from CPTC auction

On December 9, the Aviation Maintenance Honor Society at Clover Park Technical College held a silent auction to benefit Angel Flight West. The Honor Society was founded in March of this year to promote a higher level of skill and professionalism in aviation maintenance.
Angel Flight West is a not-for-profit professional airlift organization that transports people from outlying areas who require medical attention.  Twenty of the 40 aviation club members worked diligently on the auction, contributing their own time, money and manpower to raise almost $2,400.

Cooler temperatures over the past week provided notice that winter is around the corner. As the thermometer dips below 40 degrees, many people take for granted that their warm home is not only cozy but, most likely, energy efficient and cheaper to heat. For low income families, higher utilities bills can be financially devastating this time of year. Thanks to money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (AARA), the Community Connections Weatherization Program increased their reach and helped over 800 families in Pierce County ready their homes for the winter chill.

Fantasy Lights opens November 24

In its 17th year, Fantasy Lights has dazzled viewers with new themes and yearly additions to the largest drive-through display of lights in the Northwest.  Fantasy Lights operates for 39 nights, November 24-January 1, 2012, nightly from 5:30-9:00pm.  The beautiful two and a quarter mile drive takes place in Spanaway County Park, 14905 Gus G Bresemann Blvd., just west of 152nd/Military Road and SR 7 (Pacific  Ave) in Spanaway, WA.  The fee per car is $13; $28 for a mini bus (16-24 passenger); and $45 per bus (25+ passengers).  For more information call 253-798-4177 or for driving directions call 253-798-3330, or www.piercecountywa.org/parks

The election isn't over yet

Here are the most recent set of statewide and countywide measure results for the November 08, 2011 General Election as last reported by the Pierce County Auditor's Office. The report was issued 11/15/2011 at  4:12 p.m. and showed a voter turnout of 49.25%. The Auditor's Office only has approximately 75 ballots on hand left to count and the next count is scheduled for tomorrow at 4 p.m. The election will be certified November 29.
