Despite significant changes made by the Washington State House of Representatives, a bill that would prohibit sexually violent predators at the state’s Special Commitment Center on McNeil Island from possessing or accessing a personal computer has been agreed upon by the Senate. During National Poison Prevention Week, March 14–20, Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department joins the Environmental Protection Agency in warning the public that cigarettes and cigarette butts may poison children who eat them. In 2007, the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) received more than 7,735 reports of children under 6 years old getting poisoned by eating cigarettes or chewing tobacco. Sweetie is an American Bulldog. She is 8 years old and came to the shelter when her owners had to move. Don’t let her sad look fool you. This girl is rightly named with a sweet temperament.. She loves to be with people and craves attention. She is a very mellow dog. Sweetie would do best in a home with older children. She would like to be a part of the family and in on all the action. Rowdy is a orange tabby. He’s a domestic short hair cat with a lot of personality. Rowdy is neutered and only a year old. If you are looking for an affectionate cat who loves to play, Rowdy is your boy! This guy enjoys being held and wants to reach out and play with anything and everything he can get his little paws on. VetsMeetVets in conjunction with the (Orting) Washington “Old” Soldier’s Home (WSH) invite the public to join them for a fun afternoon of “Canteen Memories” live musical showcase Saturday, March 13 from 1-3:30pm. Doors open 12:30. Proceeds from a $10 at door donation goes to help WSH acquire needed equipment plus bolstering further growth and networking of VetsMeetVets. Cost is $10 at the door. The Pierce County Auditor’s Office has selected 12 members of the public to serve on the new Animal Services Advisory Panel. This diverse panel will provide recommendations to the auditor, who oversees animal control services in unincorporated Pierce County and the towns of Wilkeson, South Prairie and Carbonado, as well as coordination with community partners.

“The advisory panel members will provide diverse technical expertise and represent the variety of interest groups concerned with animal welfare,” said Pierce County Auditor Julie Anderson. “The panel will help our Animal Services division create policy, manage conflict and provide a coordinated, community response to animal control issues.” Beginning this month, the advisory panel will meet the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in Conference Room A at the Pierce County Annex. Applications are being accepted to fill a vacancy on the Pierce County Board of Equalization. The seven-member board hears appeals from taxpayers who disagree with the assessed value of their properties as determined by the Assessor-Treasurer’s Office, such as property valuations and exemption changes and denials. House lawmakers, on March 8, approved legislation aimed at improving the way bail is administered in Washington. “Today, we’ve taken a clear step forward in limiting the number of dangerous offenders roaming our streets,” Rep. Troy Kelley (D-Tacoma) said.

Passing 92 to 4, House Joint Resolution 4220 amends the state constitution, allowing judges to deny bail to a person charged with an offense that could be punishable by life in prison. Under the current wording of the constitution, the only time a judge can deny bail is if a suspect is charged with aggravated murder. If not, the judge must set bail, and if the suspect posts bail, they are free until trial. Read More→

Starting March 9, Pierce County’s ferry loading ramps at Steilacoom, Ketron, and Anderson Island will undergo preservation work. All work will be performed at night after the last scheduled ferry sailing, and ferry service will not be disrupted.

Work includes repairs to the hydraulic loading ramps to improve function and extend the service life of the machinery. The project will cost $71,000. Federal Transit Authority stimulus grant money will pay for $44,000 and county ferry budget funds will cover the remaining $27,000. Read More→
