Pierce County Library System closed on Thanksgiving

The Pierce County Library System will be closed Thursday, Nov. 24, and Friday, Nov. 25, to observe Thanksgiving.

While the Library is closed, customers may continue to access free services online and download audio and e-books, as well as songs and use e-sources with subscription magazines, personal investment information, car repair manuals and more at www.piercecountylibrary.org.

Campaign kick-off celebration for Paul Pastor

The election isn't over yet

Here are the most recent set of statewide and countywide measure results for the November 08, 2011 General Election as last reported by the Pierce County Auditor's Office. The report was issued 11/15/2011 at  4:12 p.m. and showed a voter turnout of 49.25%. The Auditor's Office only has approximately 75 ballots on hand left to count and the next count is scheduled for tomorrow at 4 p.m. The election will be certified November 29.

AIHS Apple Squeeze 2011

The Anderson Island Historical Society will host Apple Squeeze 2011 (9306 Otso Point Road, Anderson Island) on Saturday, October 15 from 11 am to 2 pm. Come and see "The Red Dragon" in action as it crushes and squeezes homegrown apples into apple cider. This long time fall community event is fun for the whole family.  The AIHS orchard features Gravenstein apples for cooking, and Spartan and Liberty apples for squeezing. We will be selling apple cider at this event.

AIHS Fall Potluck

The Anderson Island Historical Society (AIHS) will hold its Fall Potluck at the Community Clubhouse - 11319 Yoman Road - Anderson Island on Saturday, September 24. The potluck begins at 6 pm and you are encouraged to bring a favorite dish to share with everyone. At 7 pm our guest speaker, Rich Sullivan, will do a search for some of our historical families' genealogy in real time. We will have some hand-outs for people to take home and use if they want to work on their genealogies.  Rich has excellent resources and quick tips for researching family information. There will be a raffle drawing to defray the cost of the rental of the community clubhouse.

Flag Retirement Ceremony July 8

American Legion Post 138 will perform a Flag Retirement Ceremony at Bridgeport Place on July 8.  If you have a tattered old flag, bring it for proper disposal in this solemn ceremony.  The public is invited.

On that same day, join us for the Stars in  Your Eyes BBQ luncheon honoring “First Responders” from West Pierce Fire & Rescue, and University Place Police.

UP Senior Center fundraising double-hitter

The center hosted a fundraising double-hitter on a recent, rainy Tuesday afternoon with a Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction raising more than $1,000.

Anderson Island Salmon Bake, July 2

The Anderson Island Historical Society will host its traditional Salmon Bake at the Johnson Farm Saturday, July 2, from Noon to 3 PM.  The meal includes wild salmon or ribs cooked on the outdoor grill, corn-on-the-cob, coleslaw, beans, garlic bread, beverage, and strawberry shortcake.  Jeanne McGoldrick, Coordinator of Events, said, "These are the same prices we charged 7 years ago, despite skyrocketing prices for corn and salmon, due to donations from local businesses and several sponsors." Ward named principal Anderson Island Elementary

Weather ignites urge to garden

Long postponed spring weekend chores such as washing cars, mowing lawns, and gardening—especially planting gardens—got underway this past weekend.

On Anderson Island (just a short ferry ride across Balch Passage) gardeners at the Johnson Farm community plot were enthusiastically weeding, cultivating and planting seeds in their plots , anticipating a bumper harvest come August.
