Nancy Marguerite Anderson wanted to know more about her great grandfather.
His name was Alexander Caulfield Anderson. He’d come to the Northwest in the 1840s as a fur trader with the Hudson’s Bay Company.

More than three decades ago, apple cider fans on a small Puget Sound-area island “tamed” a retired fire-breathing dragon to transform the harvest from their community garden’s orchards into this favorite fall beverage.
Anderson Island Apple Squeeze set for Saturday

Saturday (Oct. 13, from 11 AM – 2 PM), Anderson Island will have its annual Apple Squeeze. We have a unique squeezer, designed and made by Chet Palmer. This year we have added a component called Recycrows. They are scarecrows made of all-recyclable materials. LeMay agreed to sponsor this component, which will award cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd winners, as voted by attendees at the squeeze. Educational Recyling hand-outs, including refrigerator magnets, will be distributed to all attendees.
Low tides will affect Pierce County ferry service Aug. 29-Sept. 2
Pierce County ferry riders in large vehicles – such as an RV, commercial truck or a vehicle towing a trailer – should plan ahead to avoid low tides from Aug. 29-Sept. 2. It was during a weekend visit to Anderson Island—”11 years ago this Memorial Day,” recalls Norma Varty, when she and her husband, Bruce, decided they wanted to retire there.
Although they did purchase property—on the side of the island that faces the mainland—the couple are anything but retired.
Two dozen share Anderson Island Community Garden
Anderson Island gardener Glenn Parman carefully measures out the string in his pea patch garden at the Island’s Community Garden site off Otso Road. More than two dozen island green thumbs were grubbing in the soil on Saturday, taking advantage of this past weekend’s sunshine. Parman, who’s been on the island since 1998, says he’s a “snowbird,” but while he enjoys Florida, he likes the island best.
