Carrell asks for more detail on questionable DOC purchases

Mike Carrell, R-Lakewood, is asking the state Department of Corrections for a more detailed explanation regarding several purchases made at the end of the previous budget year. Specifically, Carrell wants to know why a number of what he feels were unnecessary purchases were made at a time when state government is short on funds.
“Late last year I sent an e-mail request to all employees at the department asking for their input on how the state can better streamline its correctional operations,” Carrell said. “I received more than 500 responses, and one of the most intriguing had to do with these last-minute purchases made at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center.”
Carrell child-abuse reporting bill takes first step toward becoming law
Posted by | CommentsThe Senate Human Services and Corrections Committee heard public testimony today on a bill which would require people in supervisory positions who receive reports of child abuse or neglect to forward them to law enforcement within 48 hours.
Senate Bill 5971, sponsored by 28th District state Sen. Mike Carrell, came about after Carrell learned of alleged sexual abuse of children by a former Penn State University coach.
Partners conserve 82 acres on Anderson Island
Posted by | CommentsJacobs Point, comprising 82 acres on scenic Anderson Island, will be permanently protected for public recreation and salmon habitat thanks to a conservation partnership.
The conservation group Forterra (formerly known as Cascade Land Conservancy) purchased Jacobs Point on Dec. 20 with the help of grants from Pierce County and the state of Washington. The property's conservation value includes one mile of unaltered Puget Sound shoreline along Oro Bay, mature forested uplands and wetlands, and amazing views of Puget Sound and Mount Rainer.
Ferry fare and schedule changes take effect Jan. 1
Posted by | CommentsPassengers riding the ferry from Steilacoom, Anderson Island, and Ketron Island will pay slightly more starting Jan. 1, 2012.
For example, an adult fare will be raised from $4.70 to $5. Seniors and disabled passengers will pay 10 cents more as their fare increases from $2.40 to $2.50. Children under the age of 6 now get to ride for free; previously, children under the age of 5 could ride for free.
"Ferry fares have not increased since 2008, while the cost of fuel and other expenses have continued to rise. The cost of fuel to operate the ferry last year was $570,000," said Deb Wallace, ferry administrator for Pierce County Public Works and Utilities.
Steilacoom ferry terminal will close for four months for renovations
Posted by | CommentsThe Steilacoom ferry terminal will close for four months starting the evening of Jan. 3. Passengers can purchase tickets beginning Jan. 4 at the temporary ticketing facility located in the parking space directly across from the terminal or online at www.piercecountywa.org/ferry.
A portable restroom and a temporary covered waiting area will be available outside for passengers during construction. The updated terminal is expected to be completed in mid-May, just in time for Memorial Day traffic.
“We appreciate the public’s patience and we look forward to the improved terminal,” said Deb Wallace, airport and ferry administrator for Pierce County Public Works and Utilities. “We are encouraging riders to buy tickets online so they don’t have to walk to the temporary ticketing area and endure the cold weather,” Wallace added.
A bountiful feast—island style

Eighty-five Anderson Islanders enjoyed an unexpected bountiful feast on Thanksgiving Day, thanks to the hospitality of their Island friends.
The traditional Turkey Day meal was held at the Island Golf Club’s community room, said Brenda Gamble, who, along with her husband, Robert, organized the much- appreciated gathering.

The election isn't over yet
Posted by | CommentsHere are the most recent set of statewide and countywide measure results for the November 08, 2011 General Election as last reported by the Pierce County Auditor's Office. The report was issued 11/15/2011 at 4:12 p.m. and showed a voter turnout of 49.25%. The Auditor's Office only has approximately 75 ballots on hand left to count and the next count is scheduled for tomorrow at 4 p.m. The election will be certified November 29.

AIHS Apple Squeeze 2011

The Anderson Island Historical Society will host Apple Squeeze 2011 (9306 Otso Point Road, Anderson Island) on Saturday, October 15 from 11 am to 2 pm. Come and see "The Red Dragon" in action as it crushes and squeezes homegrown apples into apple cider. This long time fall community event is fun for the whole family. The AIHS orchard features Gravenstein apples for cooking, and Spartan and Liberty apples for squeezing. We will be selling apple cider at this event.

The Anderson Island Historical Society (AIHS) will hold its Fall Potluck at the Community Clubhouse - 11319 Yoman Road - Anderson Island on Saturday, September 24. The potluck begins at 6 pm and you are encouraged to bring a favorite dish to share with everyone. At 7 pm our guest speaker, Rich Sullivan, will do a search for some of our historical families' genealogy in real time. We will have some hand-outs for people to take home and use if they want to work on their genealogies. Rich has excellent resources and quick tips for researching family information. There will be a raffle drawing to defray the cost of the rental of the community clubhouse.
