Remember the Space Needle? The Science Center? The International Fountain? The Monorail? How about Belgian Waffles?

What would prompt you to stand in line for donuts?

After reading the local paper’s weekend entertainment section survey of area donut shops, this past weekend I was inspired to check out a donut eatery in Portland known as “Voodoo Donuts.” Whatever. That ‘old black magic’ worked for me. Read More→

Lakewood’s 'other' castle

Posted by | Comments Comments Off

By Nancy Covert

Most area residents are familiar with Thornewood Castle, on the southern shore of American Lake.

They’re not as knowledgeable about another castle in the region—Building 100 on what was known—until recently—as McChord Air Force Base; now Joint Base Lewis McChord.

Lakewood Historical Society’s monthly meeting on March 20 featured Dr. Robert Allen’s recap of the local Air Force Base’s 70-year history to date, beginning with its creation in the early 1930s on land that formerly was part of the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Signs of Spring at Lakewold

Posted by | Comments Comments Off

By Nancy Covert

When Wordsworth wrote about “wandering lonely as a cloud” he could have been thinking about Lakewold Gardens. While there’s not quite a “host” of golden daffodils, (there soon will be) there’s at least one brave gold bloom that’s appeared in the garden’s west-side parterre area—a brave appearance, considering the recent ice storm that created much damage in area gardens.

Even when it’s not raining it’s possible to find a rainbow overhead. This rainbow, however, is located inside, over the Children’s Corner at the Steilacoom Branch of Pierce County Library. Steilacoom Library is the oldest public library in the state, established in 1858—and one of Pierce County Library’s many branches.

How did the Apple Squeeze become a Steilacoom tradition? What does “Steilacoom” mean?

More than 200 Saltar’s Point Elementary School Fourth Grade students learned the answers to those questions and more when they toured the Steilacoom Historical Museum this past week.

The annual student class tour to visit the Museum’s properties: the Museum, the Wagon Shop and the Orr Home, took place during the last week of January and first week of February. Docents from the Museum’s Education Committee shared their knowledge about Mr. Orr’s shop, and other parts of the community’s history.

The students’ collective reaction to the displays and activities—such as making butter—“what an amazing place!”
