Champagne Harvest Brunch at Bridgeport Place

The University Place Senior Center and Bridgeport Place partner on a variety of programs throughout the year. A number of seniors who participate in bingo and other activities at the center have become regulars at the monthly Saturday Senior Soup-tacular at Bridgeport Place. November 19 was the Champagne Harvest Brunch at Bridgeport Place. The Soup-tacular is always held on the 3rd Saturday of each month. For a special surprise, all of the ‘regulars’ who attend the Soup-tacular were treated to the Champagne Harvest Brunch.
1853 kick-off to week of special events

An historical lecture about a young girl who arrived in Steilacoom in 1853 was presented for the residents of Bridgeport Place as the kick-off event for National Assisted Living Week.
Sunday afternoon Nancy Covert (above), a freelance writer, author, and journalist who has immersed herself in Steilacoom's history for more than 20 years gave an outstanding lecture on pioneer Laura Belle Downey Bartlett (below), left her mark on 'The Town on the Sound' in many ways.

Partner UP Caribbean-style at Bridgeport Place
Posted by | CommentsSuperb summer weather last Thursday set the stage for the City of University Place’s "Partner UP!" at Bridgeport Place bringing local business people and city officials together in a social setting for an opportunity to network, improve communication, and celebrate life in UP.
University Place Mayor Debbie Klosowski was joined by other city officials and council members. The event was co-sponsored by the UP/Fircrest Division of the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce; Division President Randy Walden was on-hand and addressed the group, as did the mayor.
AARP Driver Safety Course at Bridgeport Place
Posted by | CommentsAARP Driver Safety Course at Bridgeport Place is September 23 & 24, 10:00-2:30 p.m. both days to complete the 8-hour course. AARP members pay $12; non-members $14 (payable on the first day of class). Bridgeport Place, 5250 Bridgeport Way West, University Place provides lunch, dessert, and beverages both days for everyone. Call 253.565.1960 to register. Upon successful completion of the course attendees will receive a certificate and may also receive a discount on auto insurance.
Solemnity exemplified in Flag Retirement Ceremony
Posted by | CommentsSuch a large part of our local community is comprised of military families and retirees. However, even for those who may have never served in the armed forces, there is a reverence for the American flag. There is an established protocol for the proper destruction, i.e. 'retirement' of tattered old flags. They should never be discarded. The American Legion, Doughboy Memorial Post 138, in University Place is a drop site for flags to ensure their proper disposal.
Flag Retirement Ceremony July 8

On that same day, join us for the Stars in Your Eyes BBQ luncheon honoring “First Responders” from West Pierce Fire & Rescue, and University Place Police.
Classic Car Show and BBQ raises funds for UP Senior Center

It's not too late to register your car for the Bridgeport Place Classic Car Show and BBQ, if you act today. It is an annual event on Saturday during Father's Day weekend, June 18, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Senior residents of Bridgeport Place vote for their favorite cars. The classic cars evoke lots of wonderful memories. When votes are tallied the prizes and trophies will be awarded.
UP Senior Center fundraising double-hitter

The University Place Senior Center was transformed into a lively dining hall festooned with fresh flowers and cookie baskets atop red-and-white table linens. The center hosted a fundraising double-hitter on a recent, rainy Tuesday afternoon with a Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction raising more than $1,000.

A circus-themed open house event was held at the Lakewood Senior Activity Center recently. Featured were agencies, businesses, and other organizations that serve seniors in Lakewood and the surrounding region.
Health care providers included senior living communities and home care services, footwear, grief support, hearing services, and even the fire department had tabletop displays of their informational materials.
Cakes into cash

The recent Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure Bake Sale at Bridgeport Place raised $761.75 in five hours. Leslie Jo Thompson is an officially registered walker and fundraiser this year. She did the lion's share of the baking for the Bake Sale, but other team members at Bridgeport Place also contributed baked goods - everything from cupcakes to muffins and more. Professional cake decorator Crystle Rivera created and donated a custom cake "Happy Spring", which went for $50. Bridgeport Place has several additional fundraisers in the works for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. May 18 the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours will include a Silent Auction. The next event is the Junk in Your Trunk sale with the University Place Senior Center on May 21 as co-beneficiary of proceeds. Next is a Spaghetti Dinner and more to come. Thompson's goal is to raise $5,000 or more prior to the 3-Day for the Cure walk on September 16, 2011. To contribute online to the Susan G. 3-Day for the Cure: Bake Sale, April 21
Posted by | CommentsPop in and make a purchase at the Bake Sale on April 21, from 10-3, at Bridgeport Place, 5250 Bridgeport Way West. It's a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. There will be all sorts of goodies to choose from. Every dime and dollar that comes in from the Bake Sale will go directly to the foundation. No strings attached, just drop in, select some yummy home-baked goodies, and be on your way.
Soup-tacular for Seniors
Posted by | CommentsThe third Saturday of every month is a free lunch for seniors. It's called the "Senior Soup-tacular", and it's coming up this weekend on Saturday, April 16. It's a casual, no-frills, drop-in, social gathering for seniors with no strings attached. A different homemade soup is featured each month, plus fresh-from-the-oven breadsticks, desserts, and beverages. RSVP is not required. Just drop by Bridgeport Place, 5250 Bridgeport Way West, University Place, and have lunch on the 3rd Saturday of every month from 12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m. Some of the seniors who attended the March "Soup-tacular" are shown in the accompanying photo. Bridgeport Place hosts AARP Driver Safety Course

Twice each year Bridgeport Place hosts a Driver Safety Course presented by AARP. Tune up your driving skills and update your knowledge of the rules of the road with defensive driving techniques. The eight-hour course is split over two days' time with classes held from 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday, April 22 and 23. Free lunch is provided courtesy of Bridgeport Place for all attendees both days. Call 253.565.1960 to register. Classes fill fast and seating is limited. AARP members pay $12, non-members $14 for the course. Upon completion you may qualify for a discount on your auto insurance. Bridgeport Place Retirement and Assisted Living is located at 5250 Bridgeport Way West, University Place, WA 98467, just a couple of blocks south of where Cirque Drive intersects with Bridgeport Way West.
Greek festival

Bridgeport Place treats residents and guests to a special dinner each month. A Greek festival was the March theme complete with decor and authentic Greek cuisine. The menu included Souvlakia, Kalamata and Feta, Moussaka, and Baklava.
SOUP-tacular!
Posted by | CommentsBridgeport Place hosted the first of what will be a series of casual, drop-in events for seniors on a recent Saturday afternoon. The "SOUP-tacular" featured a free light lunch of homemade soup, breadsticks, desserts, and beverages. Visitors were also given a tour of the apartments. The next "SOUP-tacular” is slated for Saturday, February 19, from 12 – 1:30. Please extend an invitation to senior friends and family members. They are welcome to drop by anytime between noon and 1:30 on February 19 to sample a savory bowl of soup and take a look around to see what "Bridgeport … Living” is all about.
Bridgeport Place receives award from city
Posted by | CommentsThe City of University Place honored Bridgeport Place in an awards ceremony during a recent meeting of the city council. Mayor Debbie Klosowski and Recreation Supervisor Jennifer Robinson made the presentation of the plaque. Jaynie Jones, Community Relations Coordinator for Bridgeport Place, received the plaque on behalf of the entire staff and management team.

Randy Walden, owner of Heartwarming Care is the new division president and has set the tone and course for what will be a six-part series based on mistakes than can be "Business Killers".
