Henry Krebs (left) and Greg Anderson, managers at Lakewood Ford, hold their $2,000 contribution to the effort.

The 3rd annual Black Tie & Blue Jeans Ball raised about $35,000 to help pay for a permanent restroom to be installed next to the Playground @ Ft. Steilacoom Park, according to Charlie Maxwell, spokesman for Partners for Parks.

Held at the Clover Park Technical College’s McGavick Center, more than 150 people representing just about every community service organization and other groups showed up to support the parks project, particularly to raise the funds to buy and install a new restroom.

In addition to a “raise the paddle” offering, auctioning of desserts, some beverage sales, guests ponied up for the chance to win a variety of items. For more pictures from the Ball, see below or click here to see a slideshow.

Posted by Dave Sclair | Comments (3)

On Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, Bart Smith ended his 17 year journey of approximately 16,500 miles hiking all 11 of the National Scenic Trails in the United States. His accomplishment stands unique: he apparently is the only person ever to start and complete this feat.

A Lakewood resident, Smith is not only an energetic camper but a highly talented nature photographer and he has combined his two loves – hiking the scenic trails and photography – to produce coffee table publications and outstanding photo exhibits.

Lakewood’s Tacoma Speedway

Posted by Dave Sclair | Comments (0)
In 1912, Lakewood was a leading stop on the auto racing circuit with the Tacoma Speedway. The track, incorporating what is today's Clover Park Tech College, attracted the top names in auto racing of the day - Oldfield, Rickenbacker, DePalma, Cooper and others. The first track was five miles of dirt road that ran on Steilacoom Blvd to Gravelly Lake Dr to 111th Street to Lakeview Avenue and back to the start. The tract was modified several times during its lifetime. To commemorate this historic structure and local activities, in 2002 the Lakewood Historical Society created the plaque that can be seen today near Building 3 on the CPTC campus. The marker includes additional information about the race course. The Lakewood History Museum, 6211 Mt. Tacoma Dr SW in Lakewood, features considerable information on the racetrack. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 4 pm.
