On Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Bates Technical College will "Focus on the Visual" at its 7thAnnual Disability Awareness Day, held at the Downtown Campus Auditorium, 1101 S. Yakima Avenue in Tacoma.

The first blind graduate of the Western Culinary Institute in Portland, Ore., Jackie Cabrera will give a cooking demonstration and present on her experiences as a visually-impaired person in the field and in life. Cabrera, who was 29 when she lost her eyesight because of complications from diabetes, is now the chef and owner of C What’s Cookin’ Catering Company in Lacey.

In addition to Cabrera, representatives from the Washington State Department of Services for the Blind and Tacoma Area Coalition for Individuals with Disabilities (TACID) will be on hand to provide information about visual impairment and blindness.

“The annual Disability Awareness Day is designed to help people expand their understanding of the issues surrounding disabilities,” said Kathy Flores, ASG/diversity coordinator. “It also increases awareness of the celebrations and the challenges individuals with disabilities experience.”

Audience members can purchase two slices of pizza for $1 during the event while supplies last.
