AI's September newsletter
Posted on September 28, 2010Following is the September newsletter from Clover Park School District's AI High School. It is written by Deb Shanafelt, Principal: A.I.H.S. and Kevin Rupprecht, Assistant Principal: A.I.H.S.
What a great start to the school year. Students are engaged in learning, and teachers are busy teaching. We are excited about this new year and we have started on a good note. We started the school year with our students involved in two days of orientation activities. Students worked with teachers and fellow peers in small group and large group activities that allowed them to get to know each other and the systems of the school.
Students are now fully engaged in their classes, some of them are taught by our teaching staff and some students take internet based online classes. These online classes are facilitated through the Federal Way Internet Academy. Students are making great progress. There is an opportunity for parents and guardians to get involved with their students classes as mentors or volunteers. Clover Park School District is offering a Volunteer training on Saturday, October 2nd. We are also looking for any community member that would like to sit as a representative on our schools Site Based Decision Making Team. If you are interested in any of these activities, please contact the A.I.H.S. office.
Students have been doing great. ASB student representatives were recognized by the Clover Park School Board of Directors on September 13th for their continued excellence in student leadership. We are proud of our students. We have started a new student centered advisory program for one group of students, called JAG, Jobs for America’s Graduates. This program is aligned to the Career Choices classes in which all students participate.
We are planning a student picture day in early October. We will be sending further detailed information home with your student as it becomes available.
We will be sending Federal Impact Aid Surveys home with students on Monday, October 4th. Parents/guardians are asked to complete the form, sign in ink, and return it with their student by Wednesday, October 6th. Surveys are confidential and information obtained from them allows CPSD to obtain Federal Impact Aid monies which help fund teachers, support staff, classroom computers, library books, and other supplies and equipment in Clover Park schools.
Another opportunity that we are planning is a career field trip in mid October to the University of Puget Sound campus to learn more about Health Services. If your student is interested, please have them inform their Career Choices teacher.
Students and their families are invited to attend a Career, Community, and College Fair at Clover Park High School on Oct 5, 5:30-7:30pm. You can also learn how to review your students online classes this evening.
Come visit us on Thursday, October 7, from 5:30-7:30pm, for our OPEN HOUSE! Come meet your students’ teachers and staff members and see what kind of learning they are engaged in.
October 8 and October 11 are designated No School days. The A.I.H.S staff will be involved in professional development in the areas of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment techniques that will lead to greater student success. We would like to remind students to stay intellectually active on these days. Students are encouraged to work on homework, read a book, or make progress on their online classes.
The Clover Park School District again has several early release half days scheduled throughout the year for staff professional development. All of these early release days occur on Wednesdays and A.I.H.S. students are dismissed from school at 11:30am. One is scheduled for October 20th. Student lunch is served on all early release Wednesdays.
We are excited about this school year. We hope you are also. We look forward to seeing you at all of our student events this year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at 253-583-5390.
