Budding Scientists

Ages 5-7, $9 per student

Young homeschoolers and other children begin science and nature exploration through games, walks, and crafts. Register at least two days prior to the session.

This class is held at the Adriana Hess Audubon Center in University Place.

Tahoma Audubon Adult Education

Birding Basics

Ages 18 and older, $45/Audubon member, $55/non-member

Curious about birds but don’t know your crown from your tail feather? All are welcome to this introduction to the joy of identifying the birds that are all around us. You will learn how to identify common birds, use a field guide and binoculars. Learn too about some of the best places to see birds and practice your newfound birding skills. There is one local field trip to Steilacoom Park on Saturday, October 9, at 8:00am. This class meets at the Tacoma Nature Center. Call (253) 591-6439 to register.

Ages 3-6, $6 per child

Preschoolers explore different nature topics through stories, hands-on activities, nature walks and crafts at the Tacoma Nature Center. Adult participation is recommended, children under four require an adult present. Please note alternating times. Register by the Wednesday before the program.

September 17 C is for Changing 10:30am – 11:30

Nature Yoga

Ages 3-6, $6 per child, Adults free

Fun, child-centered activities and nature poses are combined with time-honored yoga practice to guide children and an adult partner through warm-up, work-out, strengthen, cool down and relaxation. Adult attendance is required. Participants may bring yoga mats or use those provided. Sponsored by Source Yoga.

Nature Discovery Hour

Ages 3-6, $3 per child, Adults free

Explore our new Discovery Pond play area with a Nature Guide during this reserved time. Special activities and nature discovery aids will be available. Adult participation is required, but there is no fee for adults.

Homeschool Science

Homeschool students explore science through hands-on experiments and activities. Register early – these classes fill quickly! Note – topics are repeated during the month, so select class appropriate for your child’s knowledge and abilities. Ages 8-10, $12 per student

Snake Lake Science Club

Ages 10-14, $5 per club meeting
Snake Lake Science Club for homeschool and other students age 10-14 years old who want to learn more about science and the natural world. We will also focus on helping students prepare for the 2011 Snake Lake Science Fair. Register and pay per club meeting in advance to ensure a place.

Crack the Code for Good Writing

Ages 12-14, $40 per club meeting
We all need to write well! Come once a week for seven weeks and improve your own writing with an advanced focus on the multi-paragraph essay. We’ll start with some detective sleuthing and work through the writing process. Parents, please feel free to come and participate with your student!

Natural Yard Care Workshops
Ages 18 and up

Learn about environmentally friendly yard and garden maintenance through fun and informative “Natural Yard Care Workshops” presented by the Tacoma Nature Center, City of Tacoma and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. Participants in the October 1 class will also have a sneak preview of the October 2 Fall Plant Sale at the Nature Center (no presale available). All classes take place at the Tacoma Nature Center.

Native Plant Sale – October 2, 9:00am – 4:00pm

Landscape your yard with plants that are native to our area. Planting natives ensures the conservation of our precious water resources and provides habitat for local birds, mammals and insects. A list of available plants will be posted on the website by 2:00pm on Friday, October 1. www.metroparkstacoma.org. Come early for the best selection.
