PR: Some 33,000 attend U.S. Amateur
Posted on August 30, 2010More than 33,000 people attended the U.S. Amateur that concluded Sunday, demonstrating a strong show of support for the first televised golf championship at Chambers Bay.
“Fans, volunteers and local businesses showed the United States Golf Association that we are excited about conducting national championships at Chambers Bay,” said Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy, who oversees operations at the county-owned golf course. “It will take a few weeks to close the books, but the preliminary data show we exceeded our sales goals. The staff from Pierce County, KemperSports, the USGA and our vendors did an outstanding job of preparing a world-class golf course and providing first-class service to fans.”
The county executive noted that every resident of Pierce County benefited from the weeklong experience.
“Fans came from outside the county to experience the most prestigious amateur golf championship in the world,” she said. “National and local media outlets provided coverage to readers and viewers around the world. The Golf Channel and NBC devoted 10 hours of airtime to a national audience, who got to see the natural environment that makes this a special place. Other golf courses have told us to expect a boost in rounds played due to all of this great exposure.”
Executive McCarthy added: “My team looks forward to working with the USGA to analyze the championship operations and applying what we learn to a successful U.S. Open in 2015.”

Ok, lets get some power carts for Chambers Bay now. During the amature there were carts all over the place. Having carts around will alow many seniors who would love to try playing, but can't walk the tought grounds. They could put in the 90 deg. rule all the time, plus it will get alot more income.
Come on think outside the box.

Something to think about in 2014:
Indeed, the U S Amateur was an asset to our community! It was fun to watch on national TV.
However, as a 45 year resident of UP, I have just one complaint. The news media repeatedly referred to spectators and walkers (who were required to pay a $65. weekly fee), as the "non paying public". This is the one thing I took exception to.
Many UP residents are still waiting for the promised sewer service to arrive because our tax dollars in the Pierce County Sewer fund were used to build Chambers Bay. We residents are the ones who regularly pay taxes to keep this golf course up and running, I do no consider myself "non paying".
It would have been nice, considering the size and makeup of the golf course to have left the walkway parallel to Grandview open where we residents who have paid and continue to pay for this beautiful venue might continue our walks and get a peek now and then of the action...

I agree with Ms. Tulfo... we are always "paying" in University Place. Also,,, as the media went on and on about what a wonderful golf course Chambers Bay with over 33,000 people attending, I still did not see these 33,000 people patronizing the businesses in University Place. How did this big event pay off for the City of University Place? It did not
