Competition coming to town

Posted on August 30, 2010

We've been discovered. Both Lakewood and The Suburban Times. Monday afternoon, Marques Hunter stopped by my day job (General Aviation News) office to announce Patch is coming to town. Patch is a hyper-local online newspaper funded by AOL he will be its editor. He's a former staffer at the Peninsula Gateway and is helping other area staff fill in a forthcoming business directory. The funny part happened when he asked me if I have heard of The Suburban Times. He said that at a prior stop the person mentioned The Suburban Times several times. The look on his face was priceless when I told him I was the The Suburban Times founder and publisher.

He, and Patch, plan to do much what I have been doing with The Suburban Times, except they will be hiring staff and freelancers to do some reporting, rather than rely on community members to contribute content (like I do). Marques and I had a nice conversation. I was pleased that he failed to disparage The Suburban Times prior to identifying myself. He's personable and I sincerely wish him success. Competition can be a good thing. After all, if two or more publications can profitably survive and supply a much needed outlet for community news and information, some of which may overlap, much of which won't, the community should benefit? Shameless plug: The Suburban Times has been serving the community since July 5, 2005 and plans to continue. So ... bring it on AOL.
