Clover Park, Bates partner to broadcast student programs

Posted on August 23, 2010

A new partnership between Clover Park and Bates technical colleges will benefit Pierce County television viewers with more local programming options.

Beginning in September, viewers of Clover Park Technical College Television (CPTC-TV) will be able to watch Bates student-produced programming on Comcast channel 28 every Friday. Channel 28, branded as CPTC-TV, is one of Rainier Communication Commission’s educational access channels.

The agreement provides Bates access to county cable households for its student-produced programming for the first time in six years.

“We’re pleased that this collaborative effort between Bates and Clover Park will benefit our students with broader exposure for their creative work,” said Jean Watley, dean of instruction for the Broadcast & Video Technology program. “The partnership will also allow the people of Pierce County to enjoy more locally produced television programming.”

Bates Broadcast and Video Production (BVP) students produce shows such as “Work it-While You Still Can,” an exercise show; “Sound Learning,” featuring brief guitar lessons; football and basketball games from Washington High School; and specials such as the annual Army/Navy Flag Football game and Dock Yard Derby roller derby events. BVP instructors Mike Scott and Roland Robinson will continue to work with the students to bring other programming options to the channel.

Bates will continue to air Clover Park Technical College programming on Fridays within the Tacoma city limits on Click! Network channel 26.

Ben,
To clarify the last line of your story, Click! Cable TV carries CollegeVision (programming from Bates and CPTC) on channel 26 in Tacoma, University Place, Fircrest, Lakewood, Fife and Pierce County. We've carried that programming in all locations since we launched services.

I believe only Comcast (or previously TCI and AT&T) limited carriage to the city of Tacoma.

Thank you.
Diane
