Lakewood, University Place residents receive scholarships

Posted on August 19, 2010

Lakewood residents Amanda Starr and Brian Long and University Place resident Peter Stallone have received scholarships from the Bates Technical College Foundation.

Starr, an accounting/bookkeeping student and Brian Long, an electrical construction student, have each received the Associated Student Government Scholarship. Stallone, an information technology student has received the Barbara Higham Scholarship.

Starr, Long and Stallone are three of 29 Bates students who will receive scholarships totaling $15,300 from the Bates Foundation this fall.

The foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, provides financial support to students and college programs. Its funding comes from fundraising efforts and equipment donations. All students are eligible to apply for the foundation’s general scholarships, and others who fit certain criteria can apply for a variety of program-specific scholarships.

Recipients in various career education programs may use the scholarships, which range from $150-$1,000 per student, to help pay for tuition, books and supplies. Students who are awarded the Associated Student Government Child Care Scholarship will receive $500 toward child care expenses at the college.
