Students lean on emergency endowment for help

Posted on August 17, 2010

Sign of the times. So far this year the Clover Park Technical College Foundation has granted almost $12,000 to help dozens of students who have had some kind of financial emergency.

Every quarter, students seek temporary assistance to meet short-term needs that no other sources of financial aid can cover. Last year, 93 students were helped with a total of $17,243 provided. This year, to date, 72 students have been helped with a total of $11,872.

"This year, we are seeing an increased number of students come into our Foundation office seeking emergency assistance or what I like to call a safety net," said Dr. Debbie Ranniger, Executive Director for Resource Development.

"From rent and utilities to transportation needs, medicine, groceries and even clothing for interviews, students sometimes find themselves needing to survive in order to stay in school. That's what this endowment is designed to do," Ranniger said.

Supporting the emergency assistance endowment
Already in 2010, groups such as South Tacoma Rotary and the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe have stepped up to contribute. Community partners and alumni seeking a way to have a profound impact on the lives of those we serve can now participate in several ways, including online giving.
