Tilzer wins IABM Award
Posted on July 20, 2010Chris Tilzer, a student in Broadcasting and Video Production at Bates Technical College, is one of 10 recipients of the highly competitive International Association of Broadcasting Manufacturers (IABM) Engineering Student Award.
The only recipient from the United States, Tilzer will join other winners from France, Russia and the United Kingdom at the annual International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) this September in Amsterdam’s RAI Centre. The award pays for five days in Amsterdam at the IBC conference and exhibition, accommodation, travel and daily expenses.
Before coming to Bates, the Spanaway native worked for several Seattle radio companies. When the economy soured, Tilzer offered his talents to Educational Arts Resource Services, Inc. (EARS, Inc.), where he traveled to Pakistan and Yemen to teach broadcasting as part of a team.
“Attending the convention is an opportunity for me to speak to and network with other professionals from around the world,” said Tilzer. “An experience like this comes along once in a great while, and learning more through networking and exposure to new technologies will benefit me tremendously.”
Tilzer has worked on several projects with his classmates in the Audio/Visual Technology and Communication department. For Work it (While You Still Can), a workout program that airs on College Vision, Tilzer worked on the audio, camera and lighting, and served as director and technical director for three episodes. He also honed his skills as a producer for video segments shown at the World Trade Center Global Award Dinner, and served as director on three segments of Sound Learning with Billy Farmer, a 15 minute show where Farmer teaches people how to use a guitar. Tilzer also helped develop the concept for Sound Learning with Billy Farmer. The shows air on College Vision, Comcast channel 28 and Click! channel 27, Saturday through Thursday within the City of Tacoma.
The convention, one of the largest industry tradeshows in the world, is known for revealing new products and technologies within the electronic media and entertainment industry. Each year, the IBC hosts more than 2,000 exhibitors and journalists from around the world and attracts more than 45,000 attendees from more than 45 countries.
