Byrd School marker dedication
Posted by · July 18, 2010
A historical marker recognizing the Byrd School will be officially dedicated Monday July 26 by Mayor Doug Richardson and officials from Echelon Apartments and Lakewood Historical Society. The program will get underway at 4 pm.
The marker, located near the site where the school actually stood, is located within the site that today houses the Echelon Apartments at the corner of Steilacoom Boulevard and Lakewood Dr.
In 1855 Byrd School was the first school building north of the Columbia River, according to Glen Speith, vice president of Lakewood Historical Society. The school was originally built on the site now occupied by Park Lodge School and later moved to the Steilacoom Boulevard location.
The historical marker is one of a series noting places of historical importance in the Lakewood area. An old Byrd School marker is across Steilacoom Boulevard on the Clover Park technical College campus. Discussion is underway about moving it to a site more accessible to the public and more prominent.
Owners of Echelon Apartments donated the space for the marker within their project and is co-hosting the dedication ceremony.

Thank you for this article! And kudos to the owners of Echelon Apartments for donating space for the Byrd School marker and co-hosting the dedication ceremony. I plan to attend.
The historical markers in Lakewood are important and valuable as reminders of this community’s journey from past to present.
