Wastewater Treatment Plant expansion project
Posted on July 13, 2010Pierce County's Public Works and Utilities Sewer Utility Division began (July 12, 2010) the first phase in a multi-year expansion of the Chambers Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. As a result of this first phase work, drivers on lower Chambers Creek Road between the City of University Place and Town of Steilacoom may experience periodic delays or lane closures. Work is expected to be complete by October 15th 2010.
As many area residents may remember, lower Chambers Creek Road suffered extensive damage and lengthy closure following the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake. Extensive repairs were made to the down-slope section of the road adjacent to Chambers Creek to hold the grade and roadway in place.
Since the 2001 event, the hillside between the north and south entrances to the Chambers Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant has shown increasing signs of sloughing and separation, prompting action to stabilize this hillside before a second road closure becomes necessary.
The stabilization work will reduce the size of the hill by approximately 40 feet, and includes replanting with a mix of native plants and trees and installation of a new pedestrian trail. The one-half mile long paved trail will provide a direct link for pedestrians and bicyclists between lower Chambers Creek Road and the Chambers Creek Properties existing trail system of 3.5 miles.
An Environmental Impact Statement was completed, and the development permits, shoreline permits and eagle management plan have been approved for the project. Should you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to Steve Kamieniecki, Senior Planner for the Pierce County Sewer Utility, at 798-3094 or by e-mail to steve.kamieniecki@co.pierce.wa.us.
