Quick action saves swimmer
Posted on July 11, 2010Lakewood, Wash. - At approximately 4:10 p.m. Saturday, July 9, Lakewood Fire District 2 responded to a drowning at American Lake Park North. Bystanders called 911 after a 26-year-old man was rescued by lifeguards on duty.
The man was not breathing and did not have a pulse when he was pulled from the water. Lakewood Police had officers patrolling the lake and assisted the lifeguard in giving CPR.
Lakewood Fire crews arrived within four minutes of 911 being called and treated the patient en route to a local hospital. On their way, the patient regained a pulse and was breathing normally on his own.
The man was swimming in the designated swim area of American Lake Park North, which at it's deepest is approximately 15 feet. Lifeguards are on duty in this area, as well. It is unknown why the swimmer was in distress.
Without the fast actions of the 911 callers, lifeguards and Lakewood Police, this outcome could have been very different. Lakewood Fire would like to remind you to wear a life jacket anytime you are on or near water. Also, know your limits and hydrate often, especially with such a spike in temperature this week.
