LAKEWOOD- Lakes High School's Speech and Debate Team hosted a speech competition for Hudtloff Middle School students on June 17. The Lakes students were working with middle schoolers in Mary Carlisle's Advanced Studies Program on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout June to tell them about various speech events and prepare them for the competition.

The Speech and Debate Team was started at Lakes three years ago. The team raises its own funds for transportation costs, tournament fees and additional supplies to debate. The team started competing in its second year and members earned several awards over the years at tournaments in Washington state.

“Debate is a unique opportunity that offers students an academic outlet to challenge themselves through research and communication,” said junior Angela Jong, who is the founder and president of the team. “Through debate, I've met students from all over the world who challenge themselves daily to work even harder.”

I was delighted today to read of the partnership between Lakes High's Speech and Debate Team and teacher Mary Carlisle's Hudtloff Middle School students. I taught at Hudtloff from 1968 to 1973 (then moved to Woodbrook for another 5 years before leaving teaching for business). As a speech major in college, I was so pleased when some of my students asked to form a debate team. It was my real pleasure to coach this small band of eager and talented debaters. One special fond memory is our team's celebration in a Lakewood pizzeria after a debate win over another junior high team. I'm so glad to see this current interest in debate and other speech competition events. Thanks to the Lakes High students and Mary Carlisle for enabling these activities.
