Posted on July 4, 2010

The City of Lakewood Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department launched their 7th annual SummerFEST at Fort Steilacoom Park, Friday, June 25th through Sunday, June 27th.

Approximately 75 local youngsters came out to the Kids Summer Kick-Off event, Friday, June 25th. Crafts, healthy summer snacks, a scavenger hunt, and Junior Boot Camp were included in the event. Friday’s activities were supported by City of Lakewood recreation staff and members of Army Strong.

Over 11,000 people attended the festivities at Fort Steilacoom Park Saturday, June 26th, SummerFEST’s main event. Activities included live entertainment on two stages, a car show, motorcycle rally, KIDZ Zone, petting zoo, Army Strong Fitness Expo and special appearances by members of the Seattle Seahawks, SeaGals, Sounders, and Thunderbird teams, a public market with over 100 vendors and community displays by the Lakewood Fire Department, Lakewood Police Department, Pierce County Mobile Command Unit and Pierce County Library Systems. An outdoor movie under the stars featuring Planet 51 presented by Comcast ended the activities Saturday.

The event wrapped up Sunday, June 27th. Over 300 people participated in a 5K Fun Run put on by Army Strong. The final game of a three-day soccer tournament that featured over 160 players finished up the weekend.

Beautiful weather and hard work by City of Lakewood employees and community partners made SummerFEST 2010 a fabulous event and everyone involved looks forward to next year.

I was curious who had won the Hawaii trip through the Lakewood Historical Society - I bought several tickets but was not able to attend. Thanks!

Congratulations to Don Anderson, deputy mayor of Lakewood, who was the lucky winner of the Lakewood Historical Society raffle for a condo in Hawaii in September. The winner was selected Saturday afternoon during SummerFest at Ft. Steilacoom Park. Enjoy!
